Subject: Some answers, some questions

“You’re on the continent of Neromba in the world of Variance,” the healer told him. Argus was relieved to have finally gotten the answer to his question. Unfortunately, he had no better idea where he was than before.

"Neromba? Variance? Ay'uv never 'eard o' dese places. Ay yew jok'n? 'av'n a little tuck ed owd Argus?"

Barry chuckled. "He thinks you must be joking. Says he's never heard of Neromba or Variance."

Argus nodded. "Yis... yer wha de bone demon said. 'ow far is bullrag place from Kelkenny?"

The healer apparently didn't understand exactly what he'd said. “I don’t know where you come from, but perhaps my friends are wondering the same question, since you really haven’t explained why you were in the mirror, and how you got here.” Valhorek replied.

This prompted Argus to say indignantly, "Here! No one uss asked me yet, 'uv dee?"

Valhorek finished the exam and said, "“Well, it looks like your in somewhat decent condition.Outside of a decent bath, new clothes, and some food, I think you’ll be fine.”

Argus nodded. "A bath would be sound," he said. "Ay 'aven't 'ad one in w's got ter be years now. Ay do believe ay am gett'n a wee bit ripe. But do ay blimp like ay 'uv gorrany uvver clothes with me?"

His belly growled loudly. "Sweet march'n maidens, Ay'm starv'n all o' a suddun!"

The healer explained to him as they began walking back to the main camp that everyone was staring at him because they hadn't seen anyone pop out of a mirror before and they couldn't understand him. Was that his fault? If they'd use the brains their gods had given them, they'd realize the bone demon could translate.

“You spoke of something chasing you,” the healer continued. “Now, perhaps you can explain to us just who you are, and why you’re here. We are common adventurers traveling the lands of Neromba, simple and plain.”

Argus nodded. "Yew juss keep dat gateway bied so de crant bun doesn't bairst it and thuz won't be any o' doze beasties popp'n out e'yer. Fe de gods' sakes dun let dem out! We'd all be terrn apart. Dee're mindless killers! Ay dun know whuz dee come from in thuz but there's no stopp'n dem once dee're afti yew."

Barry figured this was important enough bother with so he said, "Ehh... Mr. Smelly here says that the things in there are mindless killers and we should keep the mirror buried so they don't get out or we're all gonna get torn to bits!"

Argus scratched at his beard, nodding. "Ay would like ter get dat bath and some scram and if you've gorrany spare clothes ay wouldn't tirn me bewdle up at dem. Dun ay would be made-up ter tell yew anyth'n yew wanna know. Anyth'n ter get yew lot ter stop yer star'n!"

"Ay need ter get back quick sticks so ay tinnie warn dem about w's in dat uvver wirld," he said, shivering despite the desert heat.

*~*~*~*~*

Isobel handed the falcon back to Valhorek and followed along listening to what the man had to say. She did not trust him and wondered if perhaps he had been put there as a decoy or trap by the assassins. She quickly dismissed this... the mirror had been buried here for what was obviously quite some time. She wondered what had uncovered it.

Her head hurt trying to puzzle out what the man was saying. He spoke oddly, but the words seemed familiar. It was as if he was speaking Common, but not quite the same Common as everyone else.

She looked up at Barry floating along just above them. He could understand the man's speech. That was fortunate, but how did he know it?

"Barry..." she called up to him. When he turned to look at her she said, "How is it that you can understand the strange man? Do you know what language he is speaking?"

Barry floated down closer to her, the better to ogle her... assets... as he talked. "Eh... not exactly. I can't really explain it very well, but I can understand him just fine even though I don't know what language he's speaking."

Isobel looked at him incredulously. "Well, see, it's like this," he went on. "I come back life after life after life, right? So here I am in some strange place I've never been and I have to find someone... well, never mind that part. Anyway, I gotta be able to talk to the basher I gotta find, don't I? So..." Barry made a bobbing gesture that might have been his version of a shrug. "It's all part of the pikin' curse that fuzz-face cleric laid on me. Damn him to the mazes!"

He leered at Isobel. "Sayyyyy beautiful... how's about we grab a tent and I demonstrate the language I know best? The language of loooooove..."

Isobel snorted and swatted him, sending him flying into the back of Argus, who turned and looked at him curiously. "'Scuse me," he said.

Turning back to Isobel, he pouted, "You could have just said no!"
