Rowan had to wade behind a large rock to remove his undershorts, which of course had been filled with sand thanks to Isobel’s devilishly quick thinking. You’d think that somehow braving through typhoon-force waves would have washed the stuff out, but nooo; in fact, they were, if anything, even more itchy than before.

He chuckled to himself as he finally pulled them back on, mostly clean by now. She’d turned out to be just as feisty as he thought she’d be. It was a damn shame that mage storm had to crop up and ruin all their fun.

His good humor dimmed slightly for a few seconds as he allowed the horror of what had happened to finally wash over him, but he brushed it aside with practiced ease. He was no stranger to taking innocent life, anyway, so this shouldn’t really be affecting him.

Once back on shore, he gathered up his dry clothes, but didn’t put them on, preferring to air dry first. It was so frigging hot around here, his shorts would probably be dry in just a couple more minutes. As he wandered back into camp, his eyes immediately sought out Tia, but couldn’t find her.

Shrugging in disappointment, he instead headed toward Ravin and Argus, since Laurel was with Erlic and Isobel with Val. From this distance, he couldn’t see that his sister was actually crying; he merely assumed she embraced him for some sort of emotional support—otherwise he would have been at her side in a heartbeat, whether he was wanted or not.

“Howdy ho,” he chirped, his shirt flung over his shoulder as he moved to sit down beside Ravin, who was asking Argus about his magic. “Oh yeah,” he added, nodding respectfully toward the strange man, “Saw your little display from the lake. Pretty sweet stuff, pal. Glad to have you on the team, if that’s the way you’re gonna act in a crisis.”

While they waited for Argus’ response to Ravin’s questions, Rowan leaned slightly toward the other thief, his arms crossed lightly over his chest. “So what were you and my sister doing behind the bushes before the attack started, huh?” he asked quietly, trying to keep his voice nonchalant. He’d seen her follow Ravin scant seconds after the man had disappeared, and couldn’t help feeling a surge of protectiveness wash over him. Just when he’d gotten used to the idea of Erlic, here she was, chasing after somebody else.

When Ravin made to offer him some of the fish before answering, Rowan shook his head quickly. He tried to keep the cheerful look on his face, but inside, the thought of eating was actually making him rather queasy. When he saw the dead bodies of the centaurs, his stomach had lurched ever so slightly, and now the smell of that fish and the sauce poured over it was about to turn his face green.

He kept his feelings to himself, though. It certainly wouldn’t fit his supposed profession, for people to find out he was disturbed by death. He’d known all along, though, that while killing was something he seemed born to do, it had never been something he was entirely comfortable doing. Fortunately, he had the ability to push his emotions aside when necessary. Wasn’t natural to be truly cold, anyway, he figured. To lose all respect for life made being a part-time assassin and thief seem even pointless.
