Subject: Silence versus Access

The introduction to this forum asked if there was a compromise possible between the two sides on this contentious issue. Yes there is. And it has been going on for years. In the larger parks, designate the wilderness areas and the motorized access areas. The solitude/silence folks can go in to their areas for their type of experience. And those less fortunate due to time constraints, or physical handicaps, or the elderly, or those with small children, or those who simply choose to drive a station wagon versus hike, can experience areas in the same park in their own way. Some of these parks are huge and can accommodate everyone if managed correctly.

The smaller parks can probably do the same thing on a smaller scale. Or in a few cases can be all motorized access or all walk-in access.

The key to all this is balance and management that passes the common sense or reasonable test. When things get out of whack on either side people know it and there is a reaction and the pendulum swings back the other way. Its the NPS's unenviable challenge to strike the balance and keep things reasonable.
