Subject: Like a ball and a chain

A soft warm wind ruffled the treetops in Hopeful Valley as the night drifted in, sinking slowly to blackness over the backs of the grazing herd. It was a comfortable night, quiet but for the conversation of insects, with the promise of a sunny day ahead. On the edge of the valley two strange horses were wandering leisurely through the grass, pausing every now and then to graze and look around. They didn't speak, though they seemed to know each other. They just walked, the larger of the two occasionally nudging the rump of the other, and the slender pony in front ignoring her. Though they meandered, following the lines of the land and the easy tracks that others had left before them, they came steadily closer and closer to the herd.

The smaller one stopped, shining faintly golden in the moonlight as he lifted his delicate head and curled his upper lip up, testing for the scent of mares in season.

"Dad..." the young mare behind him complained softly. She rubbed the side of her head against his rump affectionately and then nipped the skin there gently. Lowering his lip, he cast a look back at her and grumbled quietly in his chest.

"None of that."
