I picked my way though the trees and brambles, snapping my tail about my muscular haunches forcefully untangling it from the branches and foxtails that snatched at it. The trees were thick here, their branches steepled and intertwined locked together like the desperate hands of dying lovers. Beneath these perennial appendages was a darkness I hadn't expected, and in places the trunks grew so close and with such circumference that I had to find another way around as my andalusian barrel wouldn't permit me to slip through and I was, like most equine, highly opposed to tight, enclosing spaces.

Near here, somewhere, was what remained of the light kingdom. I knew this only by vague memory and so my journey was guided by instinct alone. Several times I stopped and listened, pinning my slender ears against my skull in frustration before straining them in the suspected directions nostrils flairing as I probed the oxygen for anything familiar. Nothing. I'd come from Dark Evergreens already, it's emptiness of not dissappointment to me as my stay there had been altogether brief. At long last I gave up and moved off in the first direction that seemed right.

My reward was not swift in coming but it was a pleasurable one. The trees began to thin and the the light found her salt and pepper hide in little halos and flashes. The sweetness of water was in the air the tang of well establish grasslands, I knew better than to crash through the underbrush but I was by this time quite weary of being so enclosed in this mess. Snorting harshly, I broke from the trees for the first time and almost heaved a sight of relief. It had rained recently and my overeager hooves cut into the sod as I forgot caution in my thrill to break from the wood. I was blinded for a moment in the light, and when I cleared my eyes and centered myself, surely looking rather stupid, my eyes adjusted on the form of a single stallion. Instinctively I turned my ears back cautiously, irritated by my own brazen mistake. I prepared for hostility.
