It was such a mixed bag. -- AS, Wednesday, May 07, 03:51:02pm (d154-20-56-169.bchsia.telus.net/154.20.56.169)
So the "large file download" tickled me and there were some great bits with Raina, who I really am truly enjoying as a character. Skye's parents may be more complicated than we think, since how you define "monster"?
Then Ward killed the dog and now he just has to die. Period. Because I think they were trying to establish a shred of empathy and failed. Might as well have killed a kid because in my eyes, that dog was the equivalent of one for Ward and the fact Buddy stuck it out with him all those years meant he deserved more than a bullet for his reward.
At least one of the Fitz and Simmons team will survive, that was loudly foreshadowed. Am a little deaf over that one.
As much as Bill is having fun paying Garrett, his character was already a massive dickhead and it looks like now he's going to be an even stronger one. Which reminds me of how big an idiot Ward is for listening to the "never get attached" speech and then not learning to stand on his own two fucking feet and tell Garrett to suck it and die....
Eh

Very much agreed with you on all of this but I thought they were trying to show Ward was still decent at the time by not shooting Buddy.
He shot Buddy? I thought he shot over his head but then again aardie told me that Ward didn't do it but that Paxton's character is a sharpshooter so he probably ended up doing it, which confused me.
I'm going to go watch this again and come back here.
I still think Ward's a dick and want to know why he didn't have a bit of facial hair when Paxton returned since he was out in the boonies without anything but a dog and a few provisions for 6 months.
Shouldn't he have looked a bit like one of those Duck Dynasty fellas?
BUDDY LIVES! (At least in my mind.)
*a teeny spoiler for a season finale guest star (next week) BELOW*
Don't read if you don't want to know.
I noticed that Patton Oswalt is on the guest star list on my
Tivo for the show next week. I wonder what the hell that means...

We think he did it. -- AS, Thursday, May 08, 09:48:24am (d154-20-56-169.bchsia.telus.net/154.20.56.169)
Only Ward couldn't do it looking right at him, so he sniped him. Much as he couldn't really look at Fitz/Simmons when he pulled the ejection switch for that capsule. At least that's what I got from the episode. Because he's Garrett's pet monster.
Hopefully Patton's cameo is either a flashback or a recorded message. I don't think he's there to haunt Ward, though it would be funny if he did!!

Ward did not kill the dog..... -- Lij, Thursday, May 08, 08:01:42pm (adsl-99-31-13-156.dsl.bltnin.sbcglobal.net/99.31.13.156)
Ward shot into the air to make Buddy run off.
Then you see the dog in the cross-hairs of the rifle. The rifle was with Ward not Garrett. The cross-hairs were tracking the dog but then fell behind it and you hear Ward initiate the dropping of the pod (or whatever you want to call it). But he couldn't have killed the dog if he shot at that time because the gunsights were off behind the dog.
In short, Ward was doing for the dog what he did for Fitz and Simmons, running the dog off, giving it a chance to live.
As he said as he did it - I do care.

It seems to be quite open to interpretation -- AS, Thursday, May 08, 08:37:53pm (d154-20-56-169.bchsia.telus.net/154.20.56.169)
Because it's very possible that scene with the rifle was meant to show Ward hesitating just before he swung the crosshairs ahead and killed the dog. Just like he hesitated before potentially sending FitzSimmons to their death. Fans are seeing more than one outcome to both scenes, I am still pretty sure that killing Buddy was another baby step in becoming Garrett's right hand killer.
And it's good to have a little bit of moral ambiguity to the characters, it makes them a little more relatable usually. I just don't want the path he follows leading to some kind of whitewashing in the long run. One Spike per Joss, hopefully

Well, it is pretty morally ambiguous to ....... -- Lij, Thursday, May 08, 09:07:36pm (adsl-99-31-13-156.dsl.bltnin.sbcglobal.net/99.31.13.156)
.......... send your 2 'former' friends carreening into the ocean from a plane and think that you are doing them a favor. But I think that is exactly what Ward thought he was doing, giving them a chance to live.

Yup -- AS, Thursday, May 08, 09:39:07pm (d154-20-56-169.bchsia.telus.net/154.20.56.169)
in real life they would both either be dead or very seriously injured, potentially drowning before rescue. However since that would leave the team down to four members, Tripp's tracking device will allow them to be rescued in time for at least one of them to survive.
I discussed this with Ali for a bit, you could almost portray Ward as a victim of Stockholm Syndrome but he could have walked out of the woods with Buddy at any point. So he let himself be indoctrinated and turned into Garrett's bitch of his own accord. He just doesn't seem to realize how he's become someone who would have completely disgusted his former team members if they had the faintest idea of what he truly was. Skye did pretty good leading him on long enough to get to the cafe, IMHO
