Subject: Everybody looks like a suspect in The Americans now!

I mean, when Elizabeth asked Philip about the way Emmet got close to Fred, and Philip mentioned the gifts Fred had for Jared -- which I had completely forgotten --, I suddenly became sure that Fred was involved in Emmet's demise and was perhaps the reason Kate said to get Jared out!

But then we saw Larrick watching Elizabeth and Jared, and we found out he had put a tracker on Jared's backpack so I suspected him to actually be the author of the hidden message, not Kate! I was sure that Jared was in no danger and it was just a trap to lure the Jenningses out. Anyway he's obviously using Jared to get to them, since Kate refused to talk!

But again, Elizabeth brought out the fact that it was weird that the Centre told Jared about his parents and that Kate was out of disguise...so I was back to my idea that someone from the KGB is the real threat.

And didn't Jared look like a suspect as well indeed? Until now I couldn't believe in the theory that he might have played a part of his parents' and sister's death, but I don't know anymore. He didn't really strike me as an innocent in this episode.

As for the pastor, I don't trust him either. The way he talked to Paige during the bus trip was kinda...creepy. If Paige's storyline is meant to parallel Jared's, the pastor could be a spy in disguise trying to recruit her.

Or just a reverend trying to convert her...

Even the guy who sold that car to Stan seemed suspicious.

Even poor Martha, who revealed that she had always known about Clark's toupee (Clark's reaction was priceless, Matthew Rhys' acting was terrific then!!!!)and served FBI files on a plate! Too good to be true, right? It has to be a trap!

I'm still wondering whether Arkady is genuine with Oleg or playing him, but I'm also questioning Oleg's motivations. Is it love or something else?

That said, I was surprised to see Arkady get personally involved in the ruse to fool Stan, when he came back to the love nest and found a beaten Nina.

If anything the scene was the epitome of a situation in which appearances are not to be trusted.

Paige doesn't trust anything that comes out of her parents' mouth anymore, but the show makes me doubt and second-guess everything and everyone!!!!

The only characters we can "trust" are actually Elizabeth and Philip, for we know where they stand, what their real agenda is.

Earlier in the show (another ep) it was revealed that Larrick was looking for the person (people) who murdered his friends. So help me out if I am confused. Who are his friends?

So who were Larrick's friends which were killed? Are we talking about the people at the secret base training anti-Sandanista forces? Or are we talking about Jared's parents who were running Larrick?

The first people would be the Jennings. The second person would be who Larrick is chasing after - JARED!! Larrick didn't follow Elizabeth, he followed Jared on the train to upstate New York. To the woman in the cabin with whom Elizabeth had convolesced between seasons (or is it cabin-lady?).

I still think Arkady and Nina are playing Oleg. The money Oleg gave Nina is one way of incriminating him.

BUT..... this show is following what is believed to have been happening with the spies in America in the 1980s. So I think we will find that something is going to go very wrong for the Russians. I do not think they managed to get their hands on America's Stealth technology.

But we will see! I don't know why I thought last night's ep was going to be the season ender.

were the people at the contras base, the ones Philip and Elizabeth killed at the beginning of "Matial Eagle". Larrick was furious when he heard about the mission.

I think that the KGB is wrong about the Echo thing. The guy Stan talked to, said something about Echo not being easy to take away.

The cancer man from the previous episode mentioned bats who died because of the paint fumes...so maybe ECHO is not a computer program at all!

It would be a nice twist and an epic fail for Oleg, the technology guy.

So I believe that Stan, even if he's ready to betray his country in order to save Nina, won't be able to give Arkady what he asked...

The bats that died were from the RAM - Radar Absorbent Material - which is paint infused with micro-'balls' of iron. That scatters radio waves - radar. That is what cancer man was talking about.

ECHO is the program that tests whether the design of a plane with the addition of the RAM will disperse radar waves in the desired way.

ECHO would not be easy to remove probably because it is only on the one non-networked computer in that testing facility Stan visited. You would have to be in physical contact with that one computer (which in the 1980s is probably a large 'supercomputer' of that time) to download the program or steal a disc or several discs or tapes that the computer is stored upon. The written code that is the computer program is probably locked away somewhere - maybe on old Hollerith [punched] cards? I remember writing programs in Fortran IV back in the late 1970s and then submitting them to the computer center to have them run in a 'batch.' But even if they could steal ECHO the Russians may not have the requisite computing power to run the program.

Yeah, I was pretty sure they were talking about the Americans at the contra base. And that's what is so confusing. Why then follow Jared to New York? Does he think Jared can direct him to Elizabeth? How did Larrick even know Jared existed? The only obvious answer is that Larrick murdered Jared's family. Likely though, the show runners have another idea!!

I think Jared was his only lead to find Elizabeth and Philip, hence the tracker he put in his backpack.

Larrick told Elizabeth and Philip that he didn't kill Emmet and Leanne but wished he would have, and there was media coverage about the murder, so even though he didn't know about Jared before he must have found out that he had survived thanks to the news?

Of course there's still the possibility that Larrick found infos on Jared in Kate's apartment though. We know that Kate met Jared, she might have kept his address at home.

It's also highly probable that Larrick means to kidnap Jared to lure out the Jennings. But would that work?

And yeah, who did write the message on the toilet tissue cardboard. We assume it was Kate because she took all the paper off the roll to expose it. That should have been a tell that she left a message there.

I wonder if they (the writers) had Kate meet Jared without any appearance change just so they would have a way to say Larrick found Jared? But your point about Larrick reading up on it in newspapers would suffice. So there should be another reason for Kate's meeting with Jared.

Hope they clear it up!
