Clever and amusing. Kinda lost on me though, our Titan is the most luxurious vehicle we've ever owned and I am fine with that, dogs and luxury just do not go together. But it's nice to see commercials with a sense of humour about these high end purchases.

Kia does have some nice SUVs, we looked at a couple of theirs and Hyundai as well when we started contemplating new wheels for the family. In the long run though we needed something big enough to tow and the Titan coming up for grabs was too good to pass up, bought a second hand Matrix in fabulous condition at the same time for Ali to use, so the dogs have room for travel no matter who they are heading out with. Gave Andy our older Civic sedan, plain but clean and more than good for city/highway travel.

Never paid much attention to the Nissan trucks of late, although the first pickup I purchased myself (drove my dad's 1967 Ford F-250 for 6 years after he died) was a 4-banger Datsun 620 King Cab in orange of all colors. A friend of mine at Texas A&M had the Toyota and I was a bit envious, his truck looked better.

I shouldn't have bought an orange truck and then gone to Texas A&M. UT's colors are orange, and TAMU's are maroon and white. My pickup got hit twice in one month in College Station. The first guy backed into the front of the pickup. The second ran a stop-light at high speed - not 2 minutes after I left the body shop after getting an estimate on the first wreckage. He hit me on the right rear panel and spun me around. Yet the pickup was still drivable after I pulled the fender away from the tire.

That wasn't the last accident I had in that truck someone rear-ended me and pushed me into another car in traffic on Northwest Expressway in Oklahoma City. The impact broke the front bolts holding the seat in and my head actually travelled back through the King Cab extension and hit the rear glass. The glass didn't break but the force of my head hitting it actually pushed it out of its fitting. Had to replace the gasket on that.

Surprisingly, the old Datsun could still be driven. But after it came out of the shop, my insurance company dropped me for being "accident prone" - even though nothing was my fault! Also the transmission failed in the Datsun. Fixed that and then went looking for a new car - bought a Mazda 323 of all things - in white.

Memories....

We've only had one accident in the past 25 years-I got t-boned a block away from work by a woman who blew through a stop sign. That was the 4-runner, which had to have the passenger's side door replaced.

We bought the Titan off of Don's brother, the one who had the series of strokes a while back. He'd bought the truck locally to replace their 4-Runner, which they were towing their Airstream with between the lower mainland and California/several western states. Oddly enough, it's actually an American truck, traded in for something smaller with 4WD when the owner moved from Texas to northern BC. So you have to watch driving to keep it around 60MPH since driving a 100 would be asking for a speeding ticket!! The Titan came pretty much loaded with a full cab and of course Doug set it up for towing. Our old Dakota was towing at the near top end of it's range (6500 pounds) while the Titan can tow up to 9,000 pounds-we took the trailer out for a quick spin a while ago and Don felt it to be quite effortless. That's going to make trips over the Malahat or to Tofino easier, not to mention we're heading down to the Washington/Oregon coast for two weeks this June, so that should be pretty good too.
Doug and his wife are simplifying their lives, sold the trailer a while back and the Titan wasn't getting much use anymore for them. They mostly travel overseas now, their kids live in Australia and Korean respectively so they tend to take longer trips to see them...though Doug bought a 20ft motor home last month so they can do some short getaways. Now that he's feeling back to normal and can enjoy his retirement, it's great to see them relaxing and having fun.

The Matrix is a good choice for Ali, who has both university and work up in Nanaimo. Gets pretty good mileage and tons of space with the back seat down, enough space with the seat up that the dogs can ride in the back and her friends don't have to worry about muddy paws coming back from walks out in the woods anymore. The Civic is up at around 300,000+ kms, Andy is going to put a lot fewer kms on it with working from home and enjoys being able to come up-island to visit or drop off his cats to be looked after when he's away on business...

I only have two small quibbles with the Titan, it has really heavy front doors compared to the Dodge and a somewhat stiffer ride. I am the primary user since Don has a work vehicle or rides his bike during the summer and I have to remember to watch myself when I close the door since I nearly kneecapped myself the first night when we took it out for a drive. But Doug treated it well and it's been a great couple of months so far!
