Subject: So spoil me, 'cause I won't see the movie, how does it change AoS?
In reply to: AurraSing 's message, "Went to see "Captain America-The Winter Soldier" yesterday afternoon. It's a game-changer." on Monday, April 07, 10:34:07am

Does it mean that the Shield team ends up on the 'outside' of SHIELD trying to get back in, trying to return SHIELD to what it should be?

The quickest way to cut to the chase would be to tell you that HYDRA had infiltrated SHIELD from WWII onwards. By infiltrated, I mean that Howard Stark's death was because of their efforts, they had agents placed at every level of SHIELD and many in other government positions, along with US senators and other politicians running high level committees.

When Nick Fury attempts to get more information once he seriously suspects SHIELD has been compromised, a massive asassination attempt is made on him, culmination being in Steve Roger's apartment, when he goes looking for help from the one person who he knows he can trust. (Maria Hill was enroute to DC at his request just when the kill squad attacked).

By the end of the movie, Fury's boss is proven to be a HYDRA agent, many of the SHIELD agents have tried to kill Steve and the small squad of loyal friends he leads against SHIELD headquarters to stop the launch of three next generation heli-carriers which HYDRA was going to use to kill 20,000,000 people they had deemed enemies of a "safe and law abiding new regime of peace around the world". Those twenty million people included many political figures as well as every Avenger.

Steve's team consisted of the Black Widow, Maria Hill and a vet he met by chance in DC, who had been part of a new flight trainer squad...namely, Falcon.

By the end of the movie, they had succeeded in stopping the heli-carriers but at the loss of many lives and SHIELD headquarters was pretty much totaled. Nick Fury is dead, many HYDRA agents are arrested but it's clear that as one of their more insidious agents put it, "Cut off one head and another arises!!".

Maria Hill was getting hired on at Stark Enterprises, other trustworthy agents left for jobs at the CIA, etc. Natasha faced a government committee inquiry who was upset that one of her actions in overthrowing SHIELD/HYDRA was to release everything about the organisation to the internet, which in turn revealed her less than law-abiding previous activities, etc.

Ok, I kinda glossed over the fact that Nick was "killed" but isn't really dead...the doctors faked his death in front of loyal and HYDRA compromised agents, in order for Nick to fight from the outside when they needed him most. He's staying dead, has changed his appearance and was headed for Europe to look into HYDRA's activities over there.

Which leaves the team on board Coulson's plane in a very odd situation. Was May reporting to Nick or to someone connected to HYDRA? I think there is no doubt that Victoria Hand is HYDRA, Agent Sitwell was HYDRA and he was one of Nick's right hand guys, so who can you trust anymore?? Outside of Nick, Steve, Natasha,Maria and Sam Wilson? The Falcon, I am not sure anyone who had much to do with SHIELD can be trusted anymore. Coulson might be able to connect with and get help from Tony Stark but with SHIELD in pieces, I am not sure what the game plan from here out is.

Ok.... I sure didn't expect it to be that involved.

And to think they are integrating a TV show with the 'verse as shown in a movie is quite rad.

Glad I have the last few AoS DVR'd. Going to review before I see Tuesday's show.

Thanks, Carol!

Not having followed the comics for a while (and was never an Avengers fan back then anyhow), not sure where they are heading with all of this.

I suspect Nick Fury may have been distancing himself from Coulson to help draw attention away from the team; it's very clear that HYDRA knew there was no chance to get Nick on their team and his death was planned far in advance of the day they went after him. Which raises a question or two-was Nick trying to keep the blue serum away from HYDRA's clutches or was that a HYDRA run operation from the beginning?

Maria Hill looks like she is wearing some kind of lie-detector when she's applying for work at Stark Industries, I think that if Coulson looks for help from that quarter, the whole team (or what's left of it) will be checked out very carefully first.

Sitwell is dead after an unfortunate accident while the Winter Soldier's team was trying to kill Steve, Natasha and Sam. But there is at least one higher level field agent who survived the headquarters disaster (albeit badly injured) and I wonder if Crossbones may show up on the tv show at some point, providing Marvel goes that route.

"Trust no one" is a good motto for the team to adopt, at least once the dust starts to settle. Am curious to see where May and Ward end up, she's compromised in some fashion and after killing Skye's attacker, Ward may have more than personal issues going on.

Either way, expect a bumpy ride!
