Yeah, there was devastation alright. Philip is going down the road into a depression. I almost think that he's going to be the one to accept Jesus with his daughter.

“There is grace and forgiveness for you - for everyone,” - Father Tim

When Philip just left the church it left you wondering. And in the past he is the one who has proposed packing up the family to Elizabeth and just disappearing.

This exchange also stuck in my mind:

“You didn’t have a choice, this is war.” - Elizabeth

“I know it’s war. It’s just easier for you.” Philip

It's easier for her? I guess so, Elizabeth is the one who seems to be so idealogically brainwashed that anything in the name of mother Russia seems to be moral for her.

Philip as Clark talking his wife Martha back into being a 'mole' in FBI counterintelligence when Clark played that doctored-up tape with the G-men making cruel remarks about Martha's appearance somewhat surprised me. I figured he might just get rid of Martha if she ever showed some reluctance. Maybe she didn't reach a threshold there.

And now that Stan started working on the murder of the two KGB agents and there son (without knowing they are agents) I wonder what that will lead to.

And I'm glad Sandra is threatening to walk out on Stan!

“No, I’m not going to leave you, Stan. But I’m not going to sit around and wait for you to get the courage to leave me.” - Sandra

but here is some extra thought.

You wrote "I almost think that he's going to be the one to accept Jesus with his daughter".

I don't think that Philip's atheism was shaken at all, not even a little bit -- lesser shows would have showed him being "touched" by the minister's words and even having the beginning of an epiphany --, and given the last shot, Father Tim's speech didn't give him any peace either.

He was there as Paige's father, tried to assert his authority and to protect her from what he sees as a threat (just like that perv from season 1 whom he ended up beating to a pulp!), but when he went into threat mode his enemy did not break.

Basically, he just lost when facing another Father!

Elizabeth isn't that brainwashed, but she really is a believer so she thinks the cause is worth the pain.

Philip has more and more trouble compartimentalizing things.

I did say "almost" makes me think Philip would get religion. It's the idea that he was the one in season one who proposed getting out of the spy game and running off to Canada.

And so unlike Elizabeth he has more of that doubt than she does. Which is why he thinks it doesn't hurt Elizabeth as much. So I ask.... how much difference is there between a true believer like Elizabeth and someone brainwashed into a belief of an ideology?

It is a fine line and I do agree that 'true believer' is a better term for her than brainwashed.

I'm sick.... cold, chills, headache, low-grade fever, general malaise even though I slept - fitfully - for over 12 hours last night.

I think that Elizabeth is not blind, but still believes that the Soviets are really trying to build something known as communism. It's her religion.

I even think that she kinda understands her daughter and her need for faith and for helping to make the world better for her fellow men, while Philip is more cynical and pragmatic, enjoying the day and mostly caring about his family.
