Do you ever catch your cat staring at you, as if to say, "I could kill you right now ... very easily"? There's a reason for that: evolution. And cat grumpiness just might get worse in the future, thanks to the way we breed and adopt cats.

First off, have never owned a purebred cat but will say that the Persians and Himalayans we worked with were never very bright.

We've owned three cats born from feral mothers. Elsa and Junior were born in my garden shed up in Rupert and were the sweetest cats possible, Junior was a skilled hunter and yet was happiest sharing a couch with you.

Indiana was born from a feral mother in a log sort yard in Chemainus last year and is the most cuddliest, happiest, laid back cat you could imagine. He's one of many kittens adopted through the pet store in town and the vast majority seem to come from feral or near feral mothers caught and their kittens raised to be used to people by seeing them every day. I think it's nurture, not nature that has sculpted these cats into the great pets they are.



So really, the only reason

Loukoum had the most expressive face (and he did love sweets), and Bastet's eyes were easy to read for me.

I miss my cats and I miss having cats.

Didn't start owning one till after college but they are so much a part of our family now, from sucky Kandy to Cole the showoff and Indiana the goof. Beauty and elegance, serenity and wisdom, all wrapped up in the body of a little tiger. except for Indy, who is more like a benign potato in a furry ginger jacket but we love him all the same.

They are.

I'v always lived with cats since I was 8...until this year.

I can't believe it's been 5 months since I had to put Loukoum to sleep, and almost 8 months since that awful night when Bastet died on my bed. Losing both of them has been tough, even though I knew it was going to happen, since Bastet would have turned 20 this Summer and Loukoum was 18.

I'm still grieving but I can't go on living without cats.

Tomorrow I'm paying a visit to a lady who rescued a female and her kittens...they are almost 3 months old.

I got reminded of the feral cat that I woke up with one morning in Monument Valley. She had snuggled up against me for warmth. Poor thing didn't deserve the wake-up throw I gave it. Luckily, she landed on her feet a few feet away.

But when you wake up you're not thinking too well and fur isn't what you expect when the guy you're travelling with is bare-skinned. There was a scare of bubonic plague in the 4-Corners area that year (1977) as well. That raced through my mind when I felt fur against me that morning.

But even that feral cat had some sort of socialization, or else I would have been all scratched up that morning.
