I got reminded of the feral cat that I woke up with one morning in Monument Valley. She had snuggled up against me for warmth. Poor thing didn't deserve the wake-up throw I gave it. Luckily, she landed on her feet a few feet away.

But when you wake up you're not thinking too well and fur isn't what you expect when the guy you're travelling with is bare-skinned. There was a scare of bubonic plague in the 4-Corners area that year (1977) as well. That raced through my mind when I felt fur against me that morning.

But even that feral cat had some sort of socialization, or else I would have been all scratched up that morning.
