Subject: Kittens !!!!!!!!

After 5 months of mourning, I've been looking for kittens for a couple of weeks.

I wanted siblings, a male and a female and was in touch with two associations for which I had filled a form...but yesterday my sister went to visit people who lived close to her house, in the suburb, because she had spotted an ad for several kittens. There were a ginger female and a black male, so I told her to go and see and tell me afterwards.

She text-messaged me in the afternoon, while I was teaching, that she was there and that the ginger female was really skinny, but there were also two beautiful two months old kittens of mixed race (obviously one of the parents must have been a siamese) and that it had to be them! Turned out that the guy was working with sheeps and that a feral cat had kittens in the sheep pen, on the straw. He caught the kittens, not so long ago (they said last week), with a cage for hens, and brought them to his house. My sister left the house with the two kittens and I went and saw them in the evening.

They are indeed very cute...but quite feral. These kittens had never been touched by a human being until that man caught them, and they (she met the guy, his wife and their daughter) told my sister that they never got to touch the kittens again afterwards.

She was so convinced that thye were meant to be mine that she decided to take them to her house. She managed to trick them into a basket and released them in her bathroom. So I was told to come for supper and get my new cats. Catching them again, after dinner, and putting them back into the basket was really something! We were wearing gloves but I ended up being bitten because mine were thin. I had forgotten how agile kittens could be! They were just so scared and freaked out when they were being grabbed. It wasn't easy but we finally succeeded and my sister drove us to Paris at 10 pm.

So I have kittens. They spent the night in a rather tiny place, between the hallway, the bathroom and the WC but I'll let them have access to the sitting room and the bedroom today. They are still very frightened and fear to be grabbed again, so they mostly try to hide, seeking unlikely places, and nooks. But they ate the dry food I gave them.

It will take some time for them to get used to this new place and to trust me, but at least when they are curled up in a corner (at the moment they are behind the toilet!) I can pet them and they don't freak out. They don't hiss, don't try to bite or use their claws. I take that as an encouraging sign.

Givent the fact they couldn't be handled their gender was unknown, but when I saw them in my sister's bathroom, hidden in the closet, I managed to sneak my fingers under their tails and felt something that definitely felt like balls, so I guess I have two brothers. I had on my mind the name Tosca for a female cat but it is no longer an option.

I have decided to name them, Tibčre (it's French for the Latin Tiberius) and Leto. Latin and Greek. Technically, Leto was a female (one of Zeu's mistresses, Latone for the romans) but since the name has been used for males by Frank Herbert in Dune, I guess I can use it that way too!

I was going for Tiberius and Caius, since they are brothers like the Gracchi, but Leto sounds better than Caius when I say it out loud.

They sound like your TLC will soon pay off, if you can touch them so quickly. SiameseX kittens often have the best from both parents, I have always wanted one but somehow we end up with average Joe cats.

Tibere and Leto are lucky to have you, I know they will thrive in your care and will hopefully bring you much love and joy!

I can't tell whether they let me scatch their head because they are transfixed by fear and don't dare to move and run, or because they are good fellows who are only scared of being grabbed and picked up.

I leave them in a restricted area for now (my small bathroom +hallfway+ toilet)because it's easier to know where they are and talk to them or touch them. So far they don't eat when I'm around so I don't know if both of them eat the food that is eaten.

Oh and they look so alike and are so curled up in corners that I can't figure which one is Tibčre and which one is Leto! ;- )

My TLC? What does that mean?

They're names are very good choices, although I really like Tosca as well. Who knows, maybe one will turn out to be female once they allow you closer ;)

I like the story of how this occured, particularly because I found it difficult to chose my own kitten from a large litter... You can't yet know what kind of companion you will have, and I would have liked to chose them all!

I'm afraid that I definitely felt testicles!

I loved the name Tosca too, but the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of two brothers. Bastet will remain the she-cat of my life.

They'll have the best human pet any kitty should have!

Winning their trust will take some time, but they are nice babies. I read that some feral kittens can be much more agressive, growling and hissing when you get too close or touch them, attacking human hands even.

My kittens are elusive because they very scared when they are in the open, but that's it, they let me scratch their forehead and cheeks.

[> Wonderful news. Congrats, Chani. -- dee, Saturday, September 28, 07:40:40pm (248.38.ultimate-int.uia.net/66.146.38.248)

Lots of love, gentle handling and human interaction will do your new kitties a world of good. So happy for you!
May you enjoy many years of love and contentment with your little ones.

When I first got Bijou (at 9 weeks) from the rescue, I was told he was a girl.
Then I took him to the vet and he pointed out his tiny cotton balls.
I thought it was just some extra fuzz back there. It was the first time I ever had a male cat.

As fate would have it, the name worked out for either gender and he was the sweetest boy ever.
I've since learned a lot more about felines. Humans too.
;o)

Would love to see a picture when you feel they're ready.

[> [> What about these? -- Chani, Sunday, September 29, 09:20:17am (87-231-1-83.rev.numericable.fr/87.231.1.83)

I took it yesterday when Leto/Tosca (so for now "Toto") took refuge near my old boots:

Taking a picture of Tibčre is more difficult since he's hiden behind the toilet:

A few minutes ago, I found Leto in this unusual place (I have a sort of doorless wardrobe in my bathroom wherein I leave clothes that are either humid, or meant to be wear quickly...or when my actual wardrobe in the bedroom is too full):

Sur les v photo P9291268.jpg

J'ai peur! photo P9291267.jpg

It's actually a good place for human interaction and I scratched his/her head and cheeks which seemed to please him/her.

They are less kittenish and more young cats than I had expected. Which means it may take a little longer to gain their full trust but they will be quite the pair of little lions in your life!

They are definitely more than 2 months in my opinion, but they look older on picture. They are still quite small 5 I have very small feet if you need an idea of Leto's size), and light enough to climb everywhere.

I wish I could take them to the vet and know their age.

We now have a purring kitten on board!

Tibčre is back to the hiding place of the century (behind the toilet), but Leto is curled up inside a bucket in the bathroom (it's comfy because there are two floor clothes in it), which is much better than the litter house, so I quietly went closer and started scratching his/her head, and then I stroked his/her back and suddenly he/she was purring, and it was louder and louder, and he/she even offered her belly to my hand.

Now let's cross our fingers that he/she won't regress tomorrow, that Tibčre will follow on the same path soon, and also that my sleeping kittens won't have a big party tonight, for I teach early in the morning...

Once they associate you with food and caresses, their trust will be much easier to gain. That said, you may find the occasional backwards times if they find loud noises or strangers entering scary-do any vets the remake house calls? Once they are more settled in that may be a good alternative to having to cage and transport them to a clinic. As long as you explain to the vet their origin, that may be a route to take to check age, sex and general health.
