Subject: Aurra (and others) what did you think of Doctor Who Christmas Special?

I loved it. Moffat rules!

Lots of good bits, Richard Grant was a good villain and Strax was excellent comic relief.

As for Clara Owsin Oswald, she's a lot like a less deadly River. Clever, brave and attracted to the Doctor pretty much instantly. Which worries me a little, to be honest. Wanted someone less like River and Amy to be the next Companion. There seem to be echoes of her personality in each version, Moffat needs to have a really good explanation of her mystery.

Also, the Sherlock references were fun. He even had echoes of the theme music, lol!!

I know! Moffat loves to play with his toys, doesn't he?

I did enjoy how he played with echoes, some obvious others more subtle, and all the winks to other fictional works – Sherlock Holmes of course (btw now I want to see Benedict Cumberbatch impersonating the Doctor in Sherlock!), but also Mary Poppins, Game of Thrones (a cheeky hint given that the actress playing Clara is in RL the girlfriend of the actor playing The King in the North in GOT), or the oldschool DW (The Great Intelligence!)– or call backs to this Doctor's storyline.

I loved all the parallels betwen the three males (The Doctor, Simeone and Captain Mortimer), I loved that Clara had a double life and, above all, I loved how the new Governess told the Ice Woman that the position was now taken which was a subtle way to say that Soufflé girl was the replacement to the Pond girl and the show had definitely moved on even though the Doctor was still mourning Amy and Rory.

Moffat can't top himself after the Weeping Angels, but the Snowmen were rather scary and I liked the idea of the whole thing working like a mirror (it has been Moffat's big leitmotiv for ever!).

BTW I have a theory about Soufflé Girl. I think she is the perfect companion, the ideal companion, mirroring not The Doctor's fears but his deep desire. When it comes to Clara Oswin Oswald, to borrow Starx's line, "it's the other way round"...hence her saying "it's smaller on the outside" instead of "It's bigger on the inside".

She's a reflection so everything is reversed (it was already that way with Oswin the human inside of a Dalek vs. human-looking Daleks). The girl from the future and the girl from the past were echoes (or the blueprint?) of the Perfect Companion The Doctor is longing for. She is his alter ego, always there in time, like him, and yet in a reversed way: she keeps dying, he keeps resurrecting; she remains the same (he insisted on the fact she had the same voice), while he's always reborn a different man.

So she's either something he created or rather something he's the source of (not like the flesh but similar), or she is The Master (governess...master)!

Well, that line has become such a meme that I laughed without even knowing about the casting in-joke. Hah!

Clara as the Master would be a great twist, it's certainly a possibility given his attraction to her despite himself. I'm not much up on Master lore but don't those two tend to revolve around each other, good vs evil?

The Tardis looks more sleek and less organic inside, her perch above London was clever. Though really, if the Doctor was trying to avoid human entanglements, why hover over the earth like some kind of morose angel??

When does the next new episode air??
