That stream is about the right size for Tenkara fishing.

Well, that section above the bridge in the park is off limits anyhow, being their premiere salmon spawning stream. But it was very picturesque and cool at that time of day.

Willow is very floofy. We're curious to see how fewer dust bunnies appear around here, now that she is gone to live with Andy.

Tenkara is a style of fishing in small streams that developed in Japan. You use a light-weight rod on the order of 9/10-14 feet long (usually now a tubular graphite rod that collapses on itself down to about 2 foot) and you tie a heavy-weight casting line onto the rod (about the length of the rod) then 4-6 feet or so of light-weight tippet (2-5 lb test) and then you tie on your fly (dry, wet, terrestrial or nymph).

And then you cast it somewhat like a fly rod - or some other rather innovative ways - like the bow & arrow cast. It's fly-fishing without the reel and extensive fly-line and backing. It is mostly a method meant for small streams and smaller fish, where the presentation or a fly has to be somewhat more stealthy and also more delicate. But I've seen guys show off 24 inch brown and rainbow trout they've caught via tenkara on the Net.

I'm currently drooling over a couple of tenkara rods sold by TenkaraUSA and a micro-tenaka or tanago rod for really small creeks and fish. I have actually done a form of tenkara/tanago fishing down in North Carolina when I tied a fly on to a pole with 4 lb test and lightly set it on the Cheoah River when I was just 9 years old! I caught a number of 12 inch fish that day.

And I have also fished around here on really small creeks for pumpkinseed sunfish in a similar manner. I tied a heavy level line (12 lb. test) of 9 feet to my old 8.5 foot long glass fly rod and then 4 feet of florocarbon tippet before a fly or nymph. It's fun catching those little 3-6 inch fish and they are so beautiful. And I let them all go.

But my old fly rod is a bit too stiff for this type of fishing. Tenkara rods have a lot of tip flex in them; they get rated as either 5:5, 6:4, 7:3 or 8:2. The first number rates the stiff sections (percent of rod length) from the butt and the last number indicates the limp sections from the tip. Rods that ate 6:4 are considered to be perhaps the all-around rod and are sometimes said to be "light action [L]" rods (the others would be 5:5 - ultralight [UL]; 7:3 medium-light [ML]; and 8:2 - medium [M]).

The action doesn't necessarily translate to what you might know about regular fishing rods like spinning rods. I have ultra-light spinning rods that I fish with 2 or 4 pound test line that I have caught 2+ pound trout on. But an UL/5:5 tenkara rod would likely be in trouble with such a fish. First, you have no line to let out against a drag from a reel. Second the rod is so limp that such a large fish could likely break a section of the rod if you tried to horse him in (but there is some good news you can actually buy replacement section for a tenkara rod). So the idea is that with such a fish on a UL rod or perhaps even L tenkara rod, you either throw the rod in the creek after the fish or the tippet breaks. Hopefully, the tippet breaks! A M/7:3 action tenkara rod is usually considered best when you think you might be into bigger fish. But L/6:4 tenkara rods have been reported to have caught some rather large fish lately.

Tenkara really started off about 2008 in the US. I first heard of it while I was institutionalized down in Evansville after my blood-loss. Since then it has been exploding in popularity all over the world. There are vids on YouTube from all over the world about Tenkara fishing. I like the idea because my right shoulder has frozen up and casting a fly rod for me has turned out to be painful and next to impossible. But based in my prior experience with my fly rod for pumpkinseeds in our area, I am sure I can handle a tenkara rod even left-handed.

The Elk is pretty wide open though...

Seems I saw a guy at Fernie who is doing back country guiding for small streams and he primarily uses tenkara rods.

Cannot find him now though....
