Subject: Said goodbye to a good friend today.

Frankie suddenly became quite ill last night, his throat was swollen and he was in a lot of discomfort. Most likely cancer,at least that's what the vet thought likely-he was so terrified by the trip into the vet's office that he began having a hard time breathing. He was Don's shadow and best buddy, Don made that hard decision for him and our big Grey boy didn't suffer in the end. He'd been having real issues with our short flight of stairs to the yard and it was getting easier and easier to outwalk him most nights when we did our nightly stroll around the hatchery. It's hard to age gracefully but he tried his best, dammit. They don't have long lives but they have their own grace and a heart bigger than most of us can imagine. They love without reservation and from the very first night they met almost six years ago, Franklin loved Don (and the rest of us) with an almost embarassing tenderness.

I hope Masq understands. We brought Frankie home afterwards and sat with her by his side, wrapped up in a blanket and oh so still while she sniffed him. Eventually she laid down next to him, touching him with her body and they enjoyed one last time in the sun together. Don took him out to bury him by one the trails they so loved to ramble; Masq watched the truck drive away and laid down again, very quiet. Normally she would have cried and whined to see the truck leave with her brother in it but I think she knew.

It's the first time in her entire life she has been on her own, with no other dog around. As hard as his loss is for us, I hope she stays with us a good, long time and doesn't die of a broken heart.

One kid, one dog and two cats. This house seems very quiet all of a sudden.

I couldn't help crying a bit as I read this.

I know Frankie had a good life but it's still tough because
he was such a good boy and will be missed by those who loved him so much.

*hugs* to you and your family!

Sorry to hear of that. I got used to seeing your pictures of Masq and Frankie together.

*hugs*

Masq is so very, very quiet. We went out for our evening walk last night and talked about some of the great moments of our lives with Frankie. But as I told Andy last night, it's eerie watching her stand outside so silently when before it was the two of them keeping an eye on the neighbourhood, barking at the dogs going by and showing off for each other.

I'm home since yesterday afternoon only, after a whole month in Rome, so I didn't know about your loss.

So sorry, AS.

We're finding a hole in our lives but are making sure we spend lots of time with Masq and get our for our walks as much as possible. She's very quiet without Frankie-obviously she has no-one to share play time with or bark with anymore. But she's eating and seems to enjoy her walks, just at a much more sedate pace than the goofy girl who loved to show off her fast moves in her brother's face.
