We got home today after probably the most relaxing vacation we've ever had. Checked up on little Indy at the pet store; they still have him with his foster mom and one sis, he's looking much better and will be ready to come home with us next weekend...no more skinny runt, he's much bigger than his sister now!

A couple of pictures as well of the Whippet pup we are getting next month. He's about 8 weeks old in these pictures and if he takes after his dad, I think will end up being about 35 pounds or so. Red with white, I think he'll be quite the flashy dog when he grows up. Still waiting to hear about a potential little sis for him, the mom was taken down to Texas for breeding and they still are not sure if she is pregnant yet. But we're on the waiting list!

Big puppy, Casey is.

Is that fish ladder to get around a dam or a steep falls/rapids?

Vancouver Island is still beautiful.

There was a fawn/white boy they were calling "Big Al" but between one set of pics and the newer ones, Casey got bigger. Our previous male Whippet, Solomon, was very, very tall, so we don't mind height at all. As long as he doesn't think he's skilled at weapon use and unarmed combat, it's all good.

No dam but very strenuous climb up a waterfall for the fish. An early fix was a series of concrete pools but it's been upgraded to a tunnel through a rock wall with baffles that allow fish to rest while they climb. Really amazing. To give you an idea how tough a climb it is, three tubers accidentally put in at the campground above the falls...the guy was killed and the two girls were rescued from clinging to rocks.

Yes, the island is still VERY beautiful. Love it.

To the Casey allusion....

Sorry about the kids.

Beauty must be respected even it sometimes kills.

[> Got to looking at the Port Alberni area on Google Earth... -- Lij, Sunday, July 29, 05:05:32pm (adsl-99-137-203-122.dsl.bltnin.sbcglobal.net/99.137.203.122)

You can actually see those Martin Mars water bombers from the airphotos.

I didn't realize the town of Port Alberni was that large. It was one place I didn't get to in my travels around Vancouver Island. So is that Stamp Falls at that fish ladder?

Those water bombers are freaking huge. The other one was on land at this point on time, perhaps for servicing?? We've had a very quiet forest fire season so far but the last time these two passed overhead, they were heading for California, to fight wildfires down there. A pretty awesome sight, to be sure.

Port Alberni is a mill town that mostly lives on the tourism and sport fishing industry now. There are some small logging concerns but the pulp mill just off the center of town has been on shutdown for quite a while now. Makes for some tough economic times, they are very lucky that they are the service center for the Pacific Rim Park nearby. We stayed there because Tofino and the beaches are a reasonably short drive away-getting into the campground we like at Mackenzie Beach is pretty near impossible. We did walk Wikkinnish Beach one day but no pics-heavy mist moved in and we got pretty soaked, ate a picnic lunch in the truck and headed back afterwards
