Subject: I won't probably be able to sleep tonight

Loukoum is worrying me. About an hour ago he had what looked like an intense asthma crisis; It happened after he had done "a difficult number two" and had vomited a little bit, and I had grabbed him to check if he was clean enough (old cats!). As I was carrying him he began to struggle and mew loudly as if he were in pain or wanted to throw up again, so I let him go and saw him crawling on the floor, breathlessly, and when I grabbed him again he had his mouth open trying to catch a breath. He was freaking out and so was I.

I fetched the areokat that I usually use to treat his asthma with anti-inflammatory aerosol – I haven't used it for a while though, I probably should because he's been coughing again lately –, took my own ventolin inhaler and made him inhale a puff in the aerokat. He wasn't moving so I didn't have to hold him while I was applying the mask and counting until 10. It seemed to do the trick since he didn't suffocate and shut his mouth, but he looked very shakened afterwards.

He's calmer now but still looks tired. I keep checking on him regularly.

Until now he only has had asthmatic cough, never that kind of crisis. It was scary.

Today was a holiday and many people take thrusday and friday off to have a big week end so i am not sure that my vet will be there tomorrow.

Hi Chani. Feeling for you.
Since Loukoum had a difficult number two and also vomitting a bit, I wonder if he might be having an
issue passing a furball or something blocking his intestinal tract?
I say this because our cat Pixel had issues a couple of months ago and she had very similar symptoms.
I'm thinking of you and hoping all will be well with him.

He's got long hair and vomits hairballs one almost every day. So yes they probably cause difficult number two as well. He is 17 so it doesn't take much to upset his intestinal system.

But the respiratory distress was really new and scary.

He seems normal, this morning, even though he doesn't eat a lot.

Thanks for your reply!

[> I hope your vet is in tomorrow-do you have any 24 hour emergency clinics there?? -- AurraSing, Wednesday, August 15, 08:55:13pm (d99-199-122-58.bchsia.telus.net/99.199.122.58)

If he continues to act tired, I would try to get him in. Hopefully with some rest he will start feeling better. If he's having problems with hard bowel movements ( old cat issues ), I would look into some kind of cat safe stool softener, it may help that problem.

but we can call an emergency number and a vet comes to your home then (it's the same as the SAMU for human beings).

No more respiratory distress last night.

My usual vet is on holiday in August (her replacement should be there though butshe doesn't know Loukoum well)but there's a new vet around the corner, who's nice, so I'll check later if the clinic is open and ask some advice.

Hard bowel movements have been a problem for months. I had to get him to the vet in May, before I left for Rome. He's been eating gastro-intestinal food by Royal Canin since then, and it seems to help. But lately he also ate other food and there's the issue of furballs.

Just now he vomited again after delivering a tiny dropping!

I will let him rest for now and see how he is in the afternoon.

*sigh*
