Subject: I do believe that I owe Mark Gatiss an apology. (Series 2 Sherlock talk)

I spent some time last night rewatching "Scandal" and "Baskerville", have wanted to think again about what clues Moffat and Gatiss may have planted...plus they were a lot more entertaining than what everyone else had going on!

Anyhow, was delighted once again with "Scandal", think I spotted something there that may be a part of the clue Moffat was clucking about in regards to how Sherlock pulled off his greatest feat at the end of the series. I found it clearer that Sherlock is not just a virgin in areas of physical love but that he's just now beginning to get a grasp on the need for the other kind of love; the kind that allows you to feel something for those who have made an effort to become closer to you. I am sensing some of what must have been going through Irene's head as she realised she did have an attraction to Holmes-her comment to Watson about how the pair of them seem to be closer to Holmes than they would have thought they could have been (based on their sexual orientation) was both clever and bitter at the same time, wasn't it??

But back to "Baskerville" and what I thought was a pretty banal mystery on the face of it. On second watching, it's not really about the Hound but about Sherlock's growing relationships and how he's coping (or not coping) with the double whammy of his nic addiction and the need to have someone in his life to help keep him amused/occupied/sane. I didn't realise at the time how cleverly Gatiss was building up the emotional level in order to set up the scenario for "Falls", where our 'hero' would be facing off with his nemesis and would indeed be finally facing fear. By concentrating a little less on the seeming mystery of the moors and a lot more on the interplay between Sherlock, Watson and Henry plus the Greek Chorus of Mrs Hudson and Lestrade, I realised this was actually a much better episode than I gave it credit for.

Maybe I should rewatch "Hounds" too...

I'm a sucker for good plots and Gatiss' episode failed in that department but there was definitely stuff that added to the character's study, a turning point on the path from the great man Sherlock is to the good man he could become according to Lestrade. It moved Sherlock's storyline forward.

Methinks the whole second series was all about humanizing the great Sherlock Holmes who loves to show off, step by step, through an emotional journey, from "falling in love" to feeling fear and grief, to just falling. It humbled him to the point that he had to ask Molly for her help in the finale, and give up his reputation to save his friends.

Anyway, I'm willing to forgive Gatiss a lot since I love his Mycroft.
