Subject: Lynn, was it you ............

(it was) who told me a scant 5 or 6 years ago you and I would NEVER see gay marriage legal in the US in our lifetimes? I believe you said it might happen in Maggie's, but never in ours. I think we wagered $100 on it.

Epic fail on your part my friend. The dominoes are falling and quickly. New York (being controlled by Republicans) is just the latest.

Wanna go double or nothing the Supreme Court decides it once and for all in the next 5 years? I'll even let you be a bridesmaid if you like :)

I am not so sure the dominos are falling all that fast.

Right now there are 7 states and the District of Columbia which allow marriage for us. Eight if you add in California, should it all be upheld in the courts (and what's up with New Jersey?). On the other side you have 30 states with constitutional amendment against us. And at least two of the others, including my state of Indiana, are on a track to create constitutional amendments against marriage for gays and lesbians.

I doubt the SCOTUS will rule on marriage, except as far as the Federal DOMA goes. The federal DOMA will be overturned (no way it cannot be) and that will allow any gay couple married in one of the 7-8 states to have their Federal rights upheld even when living in a state not allowing marriage for us. But I doubt any state constitutional marriage amendment will be challenged successfully (except California which has a clear reason) in SCOTUS.

So gays and lesbians living in some states will be without any states rights as concerns their marriage. Maybe in 50-100 years after people settle down that might come to be overturned also.

So, I'll take your bet....

...
