- My dad has the same symptoms -- Erin Whitacre, 09:18:46 10/10/08 Fri
My father was in the 9th infantry division in 1967-1968. He has been complaining of worsening symptoms just like yours. Dizzy, unsteady, balance issues, problems with depth perception and very vivid dreams that keep him from sleeping. He was just told by a VA neurologist that he has a syndrome that often leads to Parkinson's disease. HE was definately exposed to agent orange and we have photos to prove it. Good luck to you and I hope that you both find some answers. At least he now knows that he is not alone.
Thank you.

- 20th Engineer Brigade Reunion 2009 -- Jerry Cook (healing and having fun), 18:28:04 10/08/08 Wed

Jerry Cook (68-69, Bien Hoa, HHC)
July 23-26, 2009
Hampton Inn - 803-788-4901 $92.00 per night.
(please mention the group to get this rate)
We're reaching out for all Viet Nam era Vets who served in any area with the 20th Engineer Brigade. After last years great reunion in Rockford, the 18th Annual Reunion will be held in Columbia (Ft. Jackson) South Carolina
. We've got plenty planned for you. Fort Jackson will be providing buses from our hotel on Saturday for a tour of the installation, museums, ranges, and facilities -- complete with lunch at a mess hall. They will also provide us with PX privleges and an on-post authorization for our vehicles. In addition, Mr. Lyle Daniels, of the Warrior Training Alliance will take all of us through a training session on the range, just like the recruits go through before heading into real combat situations. Don't panic if you're not as fit as you were in basic training...this is open to everyone, men and women, adults and kids alike. You DO NOT want to miss this.
. Thursday will be check in with an informal meal. Friday, we'll sponsor a golf outing on base -- shotgun start, 18 holes. Friday night we'll meet, renew old acquaintances and just get laid back in the hospitality room at the Hampton Inn.
. Saturday, after our base tour, the dinner will be held on base at the NCO club, and is by reservation only. We'll have predinner music by a Quartet furnished by the US Army band. Our flag ceremony will be presented by US Army Soldiers on active duty. A guest speaker will be announced later.
. This is a great place to plan a week long vacation. You won't be disappointed. With both the Great Smoky Mountains and the Atlantic Beaches (at Myrtle Beach and near Charleston) between 2 and 3 hours away, either or both would make a fantastic day trip. Closer to the hotel, at Fort Jackson is PALMETTO FALLS - a water park for young and old alike. Each night from the steps of the Capitol Building, leaves the Columbia Ghost Walk. While you are there, be sure and take a walk around the Capitol building and see the marks on the walls left by Sherman's shelling. Columbia is home to the wonderful Riverfront Zoo and the fabulous River Walk. Speaking of the River, you might want to rent a canoe for a short jaunt down the Congaree. Make your reservations before the rooms run out! WE HOPE TO SEE YOU IN COLUMBIA IN 2009 - IT REALLY IS A CAPITOL CITY!!!

Hi,
I have had my appeal meeting with a man from Washington who represents the VA, this was after my denial for any benefits as a widow whose husband died from Amyloidosis. No one will be allowed to even mention the desease during any hearings. WHAT A JOKE what was I there for? I had to talk about another related desease he might have contracted during his tour in the marine corp in Nam. When will they face the facts and stop their coverup that amyl is related to AGENT ORANGE. WHEN?? OH by the way a famous author died this past Sept from Amyloidosis too, he was also a Viet Nam vet? What a surprise he served the same years as my husband did? His family probably doesn't even know what the hell happened to him or why his pen name was robert jordan real last name Rigney

- Longshot -- Sam Veer (Hopeful), 20:23:29 03/20/08 Thu
Recieved this e-mail from another Nam vet who is loking for some help finding dust-off pilot
If anyone knows dustoff/medevac pilots or crew who flew near Lai Khe in III Corps in December 1969, please ask them to contact me tgarlock@mindspring.com
My cobra helicopter was shot down in a firefight near Lai Khe Dec 17, 1969 and we went down hard. I had a broken back, legs paralyzed (until after
surgery) and the broken bird had to be destroyed by rocket fire from the air to keep the weapons, ammo and radios out of enemy hands.
I would like to know who was flying medevac to pick me up. It is not an entirely rational desire, and I have passed on similar messages myself from grunts who want to find the medevac crew who saved their ass, while I knew the chance of finding them was small.
In my case, maybe a broken cobra on the ground would stand out in memories among so many missions. Maybe someone even took a photo.
Please pass it on, and to all dustoff/medevac pilots and crew who see this message, you will never know how many guys think of you with gratitude for the rest of their life.

We were recalled and dispatched to set up a defensive perimeter on the beach road about 1.5 miles from the bomb dump itself. I remember ordanance going off for months after the initial attack. Can you tell me if Agent Orange was used at Cam Rahn Bay from 1971-1972? I remember sitting in a bunker Bay side and all the vegetation on both sides of me dead and having lush jungle further back from the perimeter!!!!!

I am writing a book about veterans, to be published next Memorial Day by Perseus Publishing. The inspiration for the book is my brother, Jim Schuler, who was a combat engineer in Vietnam. Jim served three tours: 1st Engineer Battalion (66-67), 87th Engineer Battalion (68-69), and 815th Engineer Battalion (71). Jim suffered from PTSD, alcoholism, and other problems, and died in 2001. I am interested in speaking with or emailing army engineers who served in Vietnam. The goal of my book is to raise awareness and to promote better services for veterans. I’d love to hear from you. - On Highway QL-1 1970 -- Richard Rivers, 09:54:33 08/30/08 Sat
I was on highway QL-1 on May 22, 1970 when a large booby trap went off at a site where a culvert was being built. At the time I had been in country for a month. I was about 1000 feet away from the blast. I know there were three people killed that day and some were wounded. The booby trap killed a medic named Sp/4 Robert Marthaler, Jonny Hines and the third I do not remember his name. I cannot remember the men who were wounded. I was operating a five ton dump truck hauling backfill material from the barrow pit to the culvert site. About 15minutes before the boobytrap was set off I was talking to the medic Robert Marthaler who was standing about 300 feet away from the Army Ambulance with the red crosses painted on the sides. Does any one else recall what happened that day. It seemed like the rest of the day was a fog.

- 552 AEW&C - sent to Taiwan and on to TanSonNhut -- Suzanne Kofoid, 11:45:57 08/25/08 Mon
Is there anyone out there who served with this group from April 15, 1966 to July 30, 1966? My son has posted a comment and received one response - I'm trying to locate anyone who may have served with Allan Kofoid during this time. I've been told to secure names of persons who served with him during this time and at these locations to possibly secure proof of being in Vietnam during this time. I know there are hundreds or thousands of other veterans doing the same thing and hopefully some will recognize his name. He was attached to the 6214th support group in Tainan, Taiwan and from there rotated to Tan Son Nhut every 11 days. He has prostate cancer and the VA is denying his claim of being in Vietnam. We've been told that "buddy" statements won't authenticate the service in Vietnam so am looking for a source more positive.
Anyone?????

I just wanted to say thank you to those who have reached out to my sister to help her heal; Not only is it good that she hears from you guys that have been to war about your experiance, but that you can also help her understand mabey a small part of what my father was feeling at the time of his death.
I served 5 years in the United States Army and went to war 3 times and also to a peace kipping mission, so i have felt some of those feelings that no one man nor women can grasp or every understand unless they have served their country in the military, or in this day and age some of the civilians that have worked over in the war zone. I can't explain in words yet what it feels like to be at war and to deal with some of the things that you see and feel when you are over there. Not just for what is going on, but for the people in the country also. I know that my war the Iraqi war is no were near the same war nor would i ever try to compare it to yours, but I can grasp what you go through on a daily basis and one day i hope that i can in my own words explain my emotions within the whole process of going and being in a War.
I am going for a degree in Sociology to one day give back to all the soldiers that need help and dont recive it. So mabey one day I can save someone like my dad, for he was a good man and one that is honored in my heart and soul everyday, reguardless of the way he died.
Thanks agian for reaching out to my sister.

I am 32 and lost my father on 06.23.08 to a gun shoot in the head - suicide. I am in pain and angry at the Vietnam war. I may not have fought the war but I felt his pain, his anger, his depression, isolation, sickness with AO and other illnesses. When I was a little girl he would get so angry and his eyes would glaze over, he would get in a tackle position and run after us and beat us until he came back to reality. He was not there – he was in Vietnam all over again. I was called a mother-fucker if I complained about anything: “You mother fuckers do not know how good you have it. You do not know what starvation is or having to do with-out.” I realized as a small child that my Dad would just go nuts and it was not his fault; that he did not mean it. I was able to forgive him at a very early age. I have heard countless stories of the jungles and how 7 year old children would shoot at the soldiers. It was kill or be killed. SV camps being bombed and raided by NV. Pictures of starving children, pictures of my Dad starving. I felt his pain and remorse in my heart, it would run through my body and my heart just bleeds. Now he is gone. I accept that he did not want to feel the pain anymore…but I am still here and I still feel the pain. I know I am not alone. Please write to me because I feel alone.

- incarcerated vietnam veteran -- Marjorie Laudner (concerned), 20:08:11 07/06/08 Sun
My husband was recently sentenced for a misdeamor 5 months in jail. We have been married 40 years this month and he has never been arrested. He is 100% disabled Vietnam Veteran. This was a dispute between our neighbor whom he asked to pick up his dog poop. When the police arrived the neighbor lied and they arrested my husband. This same neighbor attacked my husband a few months later while he was walking our dog in another neighborhood and was convicted of assault. An eye witness testified at the trial witch proved our neighbor guilt. The judge gave the neighbor two nights in jail, 40hr community Service and no probation. He was ordered to pay restitution for my husband's medical bill, as he was taken to hospital for head injury, but has never been ordered to pay. Because this neighbor new my husband had PTSD he claimed his family was awfraid of my husband and sterotyped him as a crazy veteran and a time bomb waiting to go off.
This is not true as the assault on my husband made his PTSD worse because of this neighbors irrational behavior. I was wondering if there is any help to look into this matter in Phoenix, AZ or who I could contact. Thank you Marj.

- Agent Orange and Primary Amyloidosis -- Ed Beyer, 21:01:16 07/03/08 Thu
ALERT:
Primary Amyloidosis. Just by chance I had a double balloon endoscopy done at Mayo Clinic. I had at least two years of stomach cramping and blockage. It seems that there was a stricture that would get blocked and cause this situation.
At Mayo (a research center for Amyloidosis) during this test they did a biopsy at this site and found Amoylodosis. At the time they did not know if it also included Multible Myoloma. One year ago I went through a stem cell transplant (my one cells were harvested) and two day of high doses of chemo.
When other parts of my body were recalled to be check for Primary Amyloidosis... it was noted that in my routine colonscopy that the polyps were also diagnosed with Amyloidosis .. however two years prior they did not detect it then. It is because it is such a rare disease that no one would consider testing it with the "CONGO RED STRAIN" for Amyloidosis.
Also, another symtom for Amyloidosis is carpal tunnel syndrome .. which is so common today .. who would even think to test for the Congo Red Stain???
How can we get the VA to really do a research on this rare disease??? How can we warn our Vets to ALWAYS ask their doctor to test everything for Amyloidosis and use the test: Congo Red Stain????
If you have any direction in this at all, please let me know. I have put a claim into VA for this ... but as you know it is still under research!!
Meanwhile, I am not working, post stem cell, and very fatigued, just had both arms repaired for carpal tunnel, and two bone replaced in my hands for arthritis.
PLEASE fellow vets get your colonosopy and if you have polyps have them tested for Amyloidosis and use the CONGO RED STAIN for testing on everything ... carpel tunnel, kidney, liver, heart, AND REPORT IT TO YOUR VA CENTER AND PUT A CLAIM IN.
THIS DISEASE IS SO RARE THAT WE MUST BRING IT TO THEIR ATTENTION.

- Agent Orange and Prostate Cancer Help -- Carol West, 10:05:20 04/12/08 Sat
My husband was recently diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma of the prostate, Gleason Score of 5+4=9, T3, inoperable and incurable. We can thank the VA hospital in Leavenworth for not doing annual PSA test or phycial examination of the prostate even though they were requested.
The VA wants us to jump through hoops to provide them with information they already have due to earlier disability claims. Now we start over "again". We need to provide statements from other servicemen who served in Vietnam with Conley to verify he was exposed to Agent Orange and in what areas he was exposed. We are on the AO register and have been for years but that doesn't seem to make any difference.
If you know anyone who served with my husband in Vietnam we would appreciate any information you can provide. Dates of Vietnam service were 1966-1971, Plain of Reeds. He served with the 11th Infantry - 3rd of 5th CAV - 9th DIV and 4th DIV in several different areas of Vietnam.
Thank you so much for any help you can provide.
God bless all of our soldiers and veterans who have protected and continue to protect the Consitution and the United States of America.
Warm regards, Carol

It is not on the list of Agent Orange diseases. But maybe there are many veterans with this cancer and perhaps it is Agent Orange related. This is to let you know that we will be holding a TACP/DASF reunion for anyone interested on 12,13, and 14 Sept 2008 in Las Vegas. I have a deal on rooms at the MGM Grand for about $50.00 a night and I am working with Air Tran to provide a discount on air fare. Let me know if you will be able to make it or not.
This will probably be the only time to get to meet and greet old comrades in arms.
Let me know if you are going to go as our discount depends upon at least 10 people. The hotel is for two guest per night so if you are currently single let me know and we will try and share the room with another dasfer/tacper

ON 16 OCT 1961 my brother, DOUGLAS A. RATLIFF(deceased) was reassigned from the 25th Trans Det (AM) (avation maint) APO 331 to the USA UTIL-TAC TRANS (UTT)HELI CO APO 331. The unit deployed from Okinawa to Thialand and then on to Tan Son Nhut Air Base , Republic of Vietnam in 1962.
In May of 2006 A Vietnam Veterans Memorial was unvieled in Wyandot County ,State of Ohio. Myself and three other family members/brothers names were on the Monument but no Douglas A Ratliff.
Needless to say the Ratliff family was very upset. Having been to Okinawa,Thialand,Vietnam and 35 years of military experience I took on the task to prove my brother was in fact a Vietnam Veteran. As I told my sister Joyce, (MY WAR, MY SANDBOX)
On 17 Nov 2007 I received a letter from the Veterans Service Officier of Wyandot County stating that "In view of the evidence presented, I will assure you and the Ratliff family that I will see to the engraving of the name DOUGLAS A. RATLIFF on the local Veterans Memorial".
For anyone out there researching military history of a Vietnam Veteran I have a couple of hints. The dates of the Vietnam Era for us veterans who actualy served "IN" Vietnam are 28 FEB 1961 thru 12 May 1975. When requesting information from the records center, request records that identify all UNITs of Assignment. All military services maintain databases on UNIT Histories . Where the unit goes, the Soldier goes.
IF ANYONE OUT THER HAS PICTURES OF THE UTT UNIT PATCH OR OTHER PICTURES THEY WOULDN'T MIND SHARING, WE WOULD APPRECIATE THEM.

- Trying to make a personal dream come true. -- K. Mark Harp, 2/12th and 2/32nd F. A., 1st Cav. Div., 20:42:28 02/21/08 Thu
A few years ago I had to quit work due to cancer caused by Agent Orange. After taking part in an experimental treatment program with the VA, still alive and kicking, for the time being. Also have Hep "C", but what else is new. Even though cancer is temporarily in remission, my time is limited. Ever since then have been trying to live a decent life and help others to the extent I can. I spent most of my savings on a little girl who was sick since I could never have kids and would do it all over again if I had to. Unfortunately, my exwife totally screwed me over and I couldn't borrow a cup of coffee if I wanted to.
After I had been diagnosed I had to sell my Harley due to pain in my groin area. I cried when I sold it. Two years later, after the treatments for the cancer, the pain went away and I am able to ride again. Before I sold the bike however, a close friend of mine, Jim, wanted to go see the WALL in DC, something neither of us had ever seen. Jim was also a Vietnam Veteran but before we could make the trip, he died from cancer. It was shortly after he died I sold the bike.
Anyway, I have held on to this dream of driving my Harley to the WALL in DC on Memorial Day and take part in Rolling Thunder. However, my time is running out and only God knows how much time I have left to make this happen. So I am trying to find any person or group who would be willing to help me get back in the saddle and make this long held dream come true finally. I know it is asking alot but I am more than willing to prove my disability, cancer and all of that in case there are any doubts as to my authenticity. I am not looking for a new Harley because that would be asking to much, just a bike big enough to ride there and back. It was my plan to go around the country and travel after going to the WALL and try to find old friends from years ago. It would be my "Last Hurrah" in life. Would be more than willing to give the bike back to whomever once I pass away or sign insurance over to them, whatever. It is hard for me to ask for help because it is something that has always been hard on me to do. But I decided since I do not have the luxury of time on my side, might as well get down on bended knee, say a Prayer and hope my prayer is somehow or someway answered. Yes, I could jump in a car and truck and drive to the WALL in DC and see it for the first and probably only time, but then the dream I have held on to would not have come true. So anyone out there who cares to help or point me in the right direction for some help, let me know. Heck, would love some company going there if I can get an iron horse to ride on. Thanks and say a Prayer for all of our troops in Harms Way.

- AGENT ORANGE/COLON CANCER -- Karen Butler, 14:14:54 01/03/08 Thu
I have noticed that some veterans have or had colon cancer and served in Viet Nam. My husband served in Bien Hoa in 1966-1967 and came home in 1968. Bien Hoa was the heaviest sprayed area and being there was an air base close by (that stored Agent Orange), there was a major spill in Bien Hoa. (the air base was in Bien Hoa). My husband died in 1996 and I have never stopped sending claims to the Government, just sent another one, advised by my Congressman and the head of VA claims. Who knows, maybe one day the government will admit that my husband died as a result of serving in Viet Nam. I'll keep trying until I die. I was married almost 30 years and have been a widow for 11 years. So if there is a list out there of Veterans who have had colon cancer or has colon cancer, and served in Viet Nam (during 1966-1968) please e-mail me your names, I want to supply as many names as I can. Thanks Karen
