Subject: Proving Service in RVN While Based in Thailand

Between July 1974 and December 1976, as a 1LT (later CPT), I was assigned to Headquarters, US Army Garrison, Okinawa. In December 1974, I was verbally ordered to support a military unit (which I now believe was the US Army Element, US Support Activities Group/7th Air Force) located at Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base (NKPRTAFB or simply "NKP"). 7th Air Force, all of its subordinate detachments and operating locations inactivated effective 30 June 1975. According to the data record card for the US Army Element, US Support Activities Group/7th Air Force, the unit remained active until at least 9 July 1976. I left Thailand and returned to Okinawa in May 1976.

Because the US Army Element, US Support Activities Group/7th Air Force was a provisional unit, it did not leave a paper trail. The inactivation order states that personnel would be reassigned per special instructions from CINCPACAF/DP and organizational records were disposed of per AFM 12-50. My field 201 file, OMPF, medical and dental records, and my pay records do not show my being sent to Thailand. Ditto for buddy statements and/or photographs (unless, of course, someone in this forum steps forward).

How can I prove my presence in Thailand or that my unit performed missions in Cambodia, Laos, as well as North and South Vietnam? I need this information in order to convince VA that I'm entitled to more disability compensation.
