Subject: Denouement



Sun bleeds
under fingernails of leaf
and wind shakes down
scab-dry flakes of bark.

Dusk stands in hiding
with algae soaking
the hem of her gown
and a veil of willow shade
drawn over her moonlit hair.

Petals close
into the flame of a single match
waiting for her slow breath
to snuff out color,

but she remains still;
her reflection wavering
underwater
amidst silver cracked
into jagged pieces of trout.

Patience
sulks in the folds
of evening's shadow
and pouches of trunk moss
dipping into the warm flow.

Soon twilight bends forward
to brush her mouth against day.
Lips hush fire
and flamboyant time
thins to the wick
of spider climbing down
his string of silk.

Branch arches into branch,
birdsong twists along vapors
of fog
and the stream ripples --
a whisper

telling, telling me
to become night
and love you in secret darkness.
