Subject: A Bygone Era

I remember long summer nights,
our apartment high up
and moonlight filling the curtains
with pale yellow.

To escape the heat
we sat on the front porch
letting wind cool our skin
with evening’s talc.

Friends walking by
would stop to chat
about The War, weather --
or life’s company in general.

Hours would pleasantly pass
and we lingered until midnight
when street lamps dimmed
whispering “a.m.”

It was a time
when I knew my neighbor’s name
and sidewalks echoed friendship
that would spare a moment or dime
for those in need.
