Subject: August Interlude

August has arrived
with sultry days and humid nights.
A time ago
we called this month, “Dog Days”.

We would hike the woodlands
that shaded us
from the burning sun,

and splashed in the cool water
of streams running along
the path of deer and pine..

Gone are the trees
of our youth
given away to concrete roads
and split-level houses,

Swimming holes are filled in
and private pools reign in their place.

Yes, the old times have vanished
and progress marches on.
Whenever August rolls around
we are drawn back to that time
when nature prevailed.
