Subject: In Lilac Time

It’s May
and the lilacs are in bloom.

Their fragrance
blows through my window
like a sacred essence
evoking memories of you.

I remember the park
where we walked
while sunlight dripped in our eyes
with the tang of lemonade.

We talked casual details;
weather, jobs, hobbies
and the need to belong.

Soon love shadowed our path
emulating the shade
where branches entwined
like the arms of ancient lovers.

Time elapsed into months
and sadly,
the “essence of us”
distilled into memory.

Yet, each season
when spring opens
her parasol of lilacs
over the lawn,
I think of you
blinking in tune with the breeze
and a song –
“of what might have been”.
