Subject: On Her Deathbed

On Her Death Bed



When she died --
her young body laid out
on winter’s bed,
and her forehead veiled
in the room’s low silence,

he let paint
stain his flesh
instead of tears.

Small bottles
lined the dresser
and he seasoned their brush
with tints of blue than pale silver.

Applied to canvass
bristles revived her face
and spun its pallor
inside whorls of linen.

Then, he grieved
as light sailed
through a kite of glass
and his hand trembled

still possessed
by water lilies and Camille.


Note: This poem is based on the Monet;s painting of
camille "sur son lit de la mort" or Camille on her deathbed.
Shen died in 1879 at the young age of 32, he grieved his wife by immediaely painting her in the "aura of death". The idea of poem came to me after watching a series on the Imperssionists. This aspect of Monet's character and strange
inspiraiton haunted me, and after several days I decided to
compose this piece capturing my own impression of the event.
