Sorting Details
(For Madame Jeanette Maret)

Crows bend then lift
their heads away from leaves colored
brown like potato skins.

They nag the grass
with their scavenger poise
shifting
every few seconds

and causing the woman
who watches them to say
“I don’t need you”.

She finds nothing likable
about these creatures
except their wings.

They share the same shade
as her late husband’s hair

and he passed that stunning blend
of lapis and jet
unto a young daughter
Bette Marie

Unlike the birds, their girl badgers
the yard in a different way.

She plucks interest
from rose petals and insects
chiseled out of a fossil’s stone.

This curiosity
delights her mother
yet saddens deeply

as his shadow curves
in the lilt of a question mark.

“Where is Papa?”

At this point, she lowers her eyes
and wonders how to tie up
the past with a good lie.

There’s no other choice
when she remembers how he left
and landed on another woman’s lawn;

his tall frame
ducking for black fish eggs
between cocktail sips

and looks brushing the smooth facelift
of his South American heiress.
