Subject: Riddle Time.
First person to figure it out gets brownie points ;)
Three old ladies are checking in to a bed & breakfast hotel for the night. They stay in a room that costs $30 and split the cost, $10 each. Once they’ve gone up to their rooms, the manager realizes that the actual cost of the room was $25, so they’ve been overcharged 5 dollars. He sends up $5 with a bell boy, but the bell boy is greedy and keeps $2. After skimming some off the top, he hands 1 dollar to each of the three ladies. So instead of paying 10 dollars each for their room, they ended up paying 9 dollars. So, if each lady paid 9 dollars, which means they paid 27 dollars total, and the bell boy kept two dollars, that leaves us with only 29 dollars. What happened to the other dollar?

lol.. neil, is this for a math class or something? the extra dollar was spent on the room, split between the three old ladies. if they were supposed to pay 25 dollars for the room, then that means they each paid about $8.33. and so that's $25 of the dollars, plus the 2 from the bell boy or whatever, plus a dollar each to each lady making the original $30 dollars. so they didn't spend 9 dollars each on the room, they only spent $8.33and a third. lol... whatever...

hmmmm jamison let me see if i can clear this one up: the ladies paid 27$. 2 of that 27 dollars went to the bell-boy, and 25 went to the hotel and the extra 3 went back to the ladies. so the hotel has 25$, the bell boy has 2$ and the ladies have 3$. neil confused it by saying that the ladies paid 27 (2 of which went the bell boy) and the bell boy got 2$, so you included the bellboy robbery twice.....ok i dont know if that makes sense to anybody at all...but it makes sense in my head...and its the right answer...soooo yea! have fun trying to figure out what i said, james sure had a hard time

The ladies did indeed pay 27 dollars. There's really no way to refute the statement that "They originally payed 30. They got back 3. Therefore they payed 27."

haha you didnt read my whole sentence. i said "neil confused it by saying that the ladies paid 27 (something went in parentheses) AND the bellboy got 2." but the ladies paid 27 which includes what the bellboy got.

ok neil...here is what it is...thi is what we have all been saying all along!
The facts in this riddle are clear: There is an initial $30 charge. It should have been $25, so $5 must be returned and accounted for. $3 is given to the 3 friends, $2 is kept by the bellhop - there you have the $5. The trick to this riddle is that the addition and subtraction are done at the wrong times to misdirect your thinking - and quite successfully for most. Each of the 3 friends did indeed pay $9, not $10, and as far as the friends are concerned, they paid $27 for the night. But we know that the clerk will tell us that they were charged only $25 and when you add the $3 returned with the $2 kept by the bellhop, you come up with $30.

There is a man on the top floor of a tower. In front of him, there are three light bulbs set in a wall. On the first floor, there are three light switches, each of which correspond to one of the light bulbs. However, neither the bulbs nor the switches are numbered. Also present in the tower is a rickety old elevator which can only go down once and come back up once before it breaks. The man cannot see the light bulbs from the first floor, they are not in any order, and there are no stairs in the tower. The man wants to know which switch corresponds to which light. How does he do it?

haha he turns on one light bulb for like a half hour, then another one for like 2 minutes or some crap like that, then he goes up the elevator to see which one is hot, which one is warm and which one is cold....there you have it! (he has to have a good memory of which light switch he turned on first, too)

Correct Adeline. Althought the more common answer I've seen is that he leaves one on; so one light is on, one is off but warm, and one is off and cold.
Another one: There are four prisoners. They are standing in a line waiting to be executed. Between prisoner #1 and #2 there is a brick wall:
1 (wall) 2 3 4
All prisoners are facing forwards in line (to the left in my little drawing). They can only see the prisoners in front of them, but can't see through the brick wall. (In other words, #3 can see #2, and #4 can see #3 and #2.)
Prisoner #1 is wearing a black hat.
#2 is wearing a white hat.
#3 is wearing a black hat.
#4 is wearing a white hat.
No prisoner knows what color hat they're wearing. They only know the colors of the hats that they can see on the prisoners in front of them, and they can't see through the wall. However, they all know that there are two black hats and two white hats among the four of them.
The executioner says, "If any of you can tell me what color hat you're wearing, you will live. If you guess wrong, you will die first." There is a minute of silence. Then, one of the prisoners announces their hat's color correctly. Which prisoner is it?

hmmm i guess im jsut a big loser, because i really enjoy figuring out these problems. haha.... k so dove, its not necessarily 4 because #1's hat could be white or black, and tanner, good one.
k, heres the answer: #3 wanna know why? because if number 2 and 3's hats were white, then number 4 could say that his hat was black, or if they were both black, he could say his was white, right? but he didnt know the answer, which means that #3 knew the hats were 2 different colors, and he knew that #2's hat was white, so he knew his hat was black. yay!!!
(#3 had to be pretty smart to know to wait a minute before being certain...)

he didnt need to know them, he just needed to know that one of them was black and one of them was white, and if they were both white or both black, then number 4 would know the answer, which is why number 3 waited a while before he answered

ok, people, riddle number 1, you simply need to remember that we are not trying to add back up to 30$... we are trying to go back down to 25. you have 30 bucks, give 5 to the kid, kid gives three back to ladies, and keeps 2. the equation is 30 -3 -2, or 25 +3 +2, not 30 -3 +2. ther is no extra dollar, neils just playin with ur minds

i totally get number 1, buts its really hard to explain... hmm so yea each lday paid $9, which times 3, is 27. but since the hotel only has 25 of that 27, the two dollars that the bellboy took are already in that 27. so each old lady has 3 dollars, and 3, plus 25, plus 2 equals 30. neil is jsut trying to screw everyone up by telling u to add the wrong things.

The woman was the airplane pilot. She did nothing, and so when the other plane crashed into her 'cause she looked 100 times hotter than Rachel Leigh Cook. The pilot was a 28 year-old male who was thinking "hrm, maybe she'd consider dating me", when he should have been thinking "SHOOT, WE'RE GONNA DIE!!!!!!!"

Did i ever say sally had to be human? Sally was a duck! she coulen't carry anything cuz, welll, she doesn't have hands! no one could blame her, cuz shes a duck! Sally killed everyone, by getting sucked into one of the planes, overlaoding the plane engine, and it finally blew up the plane!
see what i mean? ima genious! no one could figure out mine! muahahahha! ive plenty more.........but i'll wait til later to reveal more.........

so, i get home from school today and i think, "hey, i'll see whats up on the voy!"
so, first thread i see is this one with a bunch of riddles and i think "riddles? i love riddles! my brain could use a workout.."
so, then, i'm reading along, getting really confused with the whole missing dollar thing, and i think "wow, when are we gunna get to a riddle that doesn't hurt my head so much."
so, then, i get to pj's and i keep scrolling waiting to see the answer because by this point in time i'm thinkin "wow, my head really hurts from all this thinkin!"
