• "The Bolter" by Frances Osborne (Great Granddaughter Of The Bolter) -- Lemora, 19:33:26 06/03/12 Sun
  This is a biography of Lady Idina Sackville, cousin to Vita Sackville-West. "Bolters" were aristocratic Englishwomen of the 1920's --think Lady Mary Crawley if she'd married Sir Richard Carlisle-- who "bolted:" Got infamously divorced, leaving husbands and often children to go off with a lover and/or start new lives. Divorce, and the accompanying social fall from Grace, did not hold the terror it had held prior to WWI. Lady Idina, however, set the template for wild behavior: Widow of Lord Erroll (whose murder was never officially solved), she was the most notorious member of the Happy Valley set in Kenya --drugs; group sex; wife swapping, etc. In her fifties, she took lovers away from rivals less than half her age. Nancy Mitford based the mother of Fanny Logan, narrator of "Love In A Cold Climate" --called "The Bolter"-- on Idina Sackville. She wasn't beautiful and her figure wasn't particularly good, but apparently she had SA oozing out of her pores. I haven't read this, but it's on my Downton Abbey Methadone List.

  This book is probably one of the best books other than a DG book I have ever read. There are sentences and paragraphs that the author has written that will take your breath away with their beauty/sadness. I can't recommend it highly enough. The one bad thing I can say is that it is the author's first work. I wanted to read more from her! The main character is a young midwife in Albany, New York at the beginning on the Civil War. Mary Sutter could be Claire's long lost cousin- wild curly hair, a wide streak of independence, and a desire to become a doctor that she will not let anyone stop her from accomplishing.
  Here is a summary from Amazon: "The Civil War offers a 20-year-old midwife who dreams of becoming a doctor the medical experience she craves, plus hard work and heartbreak, in this rich debut that takes readers from a small upstate New York doctor's office to a Union hospital overflowing with the wounded and dying. Though she's too young for the nursing corps, Mary Sutter goes to Washington, anyway, and, after a chance meeting with a presidential secretary, is led to the Union Hotel Hospital, where she assists chief surgeon William Stipp and becomes so integral to Stipp's work she ignores her mother's pleas to return home to deliver her sister's baby. From a variety of perspectives—Mary, Stipp, their families, and social, political, and military leaders—the novel offers readers a picture of a time of medical hardship, crisis, and opportunity. Oliveira depicts the amputation of a leg, the delivery of a baby, and soldierly life; these are among the fine details that set this novel above the gauzier variety of Civil War fiction.   • I don't know if you all have heard about this (those of you on my FB page surely have), but they've banned Fifty Shades in my local library. (They actually had them on the shelves, people checked them out, the library director read reviews, THEN they pulled them.) Once all the books have been returned from check-out, that's it. They won't be available anymore. This is blatant censorship. I've started a petition. Everyone can sign, no matter where you live.   • No matter how hard I try, when I read Christian's dialog I "hear" Jamie's voice. Was driving me crazy until I learned the author is British. There are many dialog moments where I tell myself an American male just would not use that phrasing. I too found myself skipping repetitive scene's and there are many.   I've just finished the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. I was totally hooked from the beginning. I wasn't sure I'd like them when my son recommended them to me, but I'm glad I them a go. They're a thoroughly enjoyable and quick read. Lots of action adventure, but also follows the themes of fear, mistrust, self sacrifice for loved ones and the questioning of a repressive regime and status quo.
  
  I now have that flat feeling you get when you've finished a totally enthralling series of books. I'm sure we all know how that feels!

    • I went to see the movie at the weekend and really enjoyed it. I was worried they'd change too many things, but it was one of the better adaptations I've seen. Yeah, there are fae, vamps and weres, but the books are really about her.   Just finished this book. Such a great read. this book is so well written, I felt smart every time I picked it up! The story (as you might know from the movie trailers as it came out last week) is a bit disturbing to say the least...but there is no glorified violence in it. It is the story, written in a series of letters that explain and analyse this woman's life from the point that she decided to have a child, up until the point her child was arrested at the age of 15 for shooting students at his school. She recounts all of the doubts and worries and tell-tale signs she experienced raising this child as a way to heal and grieve and work out the incredible guilt and responsibility she feels. Amazing read, and I hear the movie is also amazing. Going to see it next week.

• "Rin Tin Tin: The Life And The Legend" by Susan Orlean -- Lemora, 22:14:25 04/17/12 Tue
  Calling all dog lovers! I've just started this memoir/biography and am totally enthralled. It's my favorite animal book since Laura Hillenbrand's "Sea Biscuit." What Hillenbrand did for the forgotten legacies of Charles Howard, Red Pollard, and Tom Smith and their remarkable horse, Orlean does for those most responsible for the initial success and continuing legacy of Rin Tin Tin. He was a German Shepard who became a movie star in the 1920's. Rinty was born in a bombed out military facility in France in 1918, during WWI. Found by American soldier Lee Duncan, he was brought back to the United States and hit it big in Hollywood. Fourteen years later, Rinty died in the arms of Jean Harlow, who lived across the street in Beverly Hills. Not a bad life. Rinty's descendants enjoyed varying degrees of success. I most vividly remember Rin Tin Tin III in a television series in 1956. I can still hear Rusty yell, "Yo Rinty!" This story of Lee Duncan's orphaned childhood; the halcyon days of Rinty I's performing career; Duncan's and Rinty III's 1950's TV producer Bert Leonard; Daphne Hereford, current owner of "Rinty VIII" who travels around the U.S. keeping the legacy alive, and others is beautiful and heartbreaking. My mom owned a puppy sired by the original Rinty, and named --of course-- Rin Tin Tin, 1927-1937. I have a wonderful photo of mom's Rinty in an ancient bakelite frame. If you love dogs, get this book.

    • Jodi, if you get the hard cover book, you'll notice it has one of the very worst covers ever put on a book (you'll see what I mean.) Also, the paucity of photos is disappointing. This story cries out for lots of pictures. It's curious, in that Susan Orlean is a famous, best-selling author who no doubt had a generous advance from the publisher, Simon and Schuster. The book seems produced on the cheap, by an obscure, University press rather than a major publishing house. Curious. But, it's still a great read. Let us know what you think of it! It has me Googling away at all the obscure people she has unearthed from the dog performing/training world in the early to mid twentieth century U.S. (I've got to give Seabiscuit another read.)   Hi, I was hoping for some book recommendations. What I am interested in is Historical Fiction about Savannah Georgia taking place between 1800-1900. Not really about The Civil War but maybe what life was like back then. I don't want really to read a real history book and get bogged down in too many details. Something with accurate details but with some kind of story behind it.

  • Try Eugenia Price's Savannah, the first of four books set in, of all places, Savannah, as is Savannah Grey: A Tale of Antebellum Georgia by Jim Jordan. I remember reading Savannah many years ago; the other I have not read, but the reviews on Amazon look good. Check your library for them, the prices on Amazon are outrageous. Hope this helps!   • "Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil" by John Berendt is a non-fiction novel about a murder in Savannah in about 1980. But.... there is loads of local history and he takes you back in time to the early 1900's and into the nineteenth century. The book is loaded with atmosphere, detail and eccentric characters --to put it mildly-- and Savannah history. It's very dark in spots, but also side-splittingly hysterically funny.   • Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill. It's a book about a slave and the time period is late 1700's, but some of the story takes place in Charleston and Savannah.   Thanks Jayn for recommending this book. I agreed with one poster below that my jaw dropped a few times reading it. The characters have saved with me, which is how I know it "got" to me as a story. JJL knew that, talking to this guy who thinks a young woman is giving fifty dollar blow jobs in cars on Hollywood Blvd. because it's "fun," meant she had to get out of that office right away.   Loved, loved, LOVED this book!
  
  In 1874 a Cheyenne Indian chief meets with President Grant asking to trade 1000 white women for horses, as a way for the tribe to assimilate into the white mans world.
  
  The chief did indeed ask, but the President said "no."
  
  This book is about... if the President said "yes." And follows the women when they join the tribe.
  
  Mary Dodd is such a wonderful character, a bit ahead of her time, funny, and her journal entries basically tell the story. The book has the flavore of "These is my Words", if you have read that.

  I am around 90% through this new release (release date 3/17/12) I must say this 3rd installment of this story is her best thus far. FOA has a voice all it's own and deserves to be read. There is a maturity and confidence of writing I hadn't quite felt before. There is love, intrigue, heartbreak (in all it's many forms) and I think the storiies of Ragged Jack and the Crooked Man will blow you away, it's a mastery of metaphors so beautifully written.

• I just finished LOVER REBORN. If you are a fan of this series, you will not be disappointed. All of your favorite brothers appear through out the story. There were parts that made me laugh out loud and a few scenes that really made me cry. The end of the story sets the scene for a number of possibilities for the next book.
