  I believe this is a new author and this book was published Feb 1 2012. Wow!! I couldn't put this book down. It is an emotional ride right from the first page, of a poor little 9 yr old girl growing up in the worst of family conditions. Starts off in the depression times in the Mississippi and continues until Millie is 17 years old. How she strives to survive and overcome her many challenges. From what I have seen other people mention on reviews, it looks like there might be a sequel. I hope so, because I am so anxious to see what happens to Millie next.

  Wow, what an interesting and controversial book. It was fascinating to read. While I think the author has a few issues and is over the top abusive, I couldn't argue with alot of the philosophies of western vs. eastern child raising techniques that she proposes. I had to agree with alot of what she says and a few things hit close to home as a "western" parent myself. I also have to give it to her for being so honest about her home life, I'm sure that wasn't an easy thing to reveal.

  Has anyone read Divergent by Veronica Roth? I read the first wee bit as a free preview and it looks interesting, but I'm not sure if I should buy the HB or the cheapie Kobo version.
  
  The premise is an alternat Chicago (I'm not sure if it's future or just different) where all people are divided into categories according to their inclinations, there are the truthtellers, the learners, the aesthtics etc (there have proper names but I can't remember them). The groups do not mix more than strictly necessary. If you don't fit a category you are a homeless outcast and lucky to survive. The hero is a 'divergent' which is an extremely dangerous thing to be, we don't know just why but she was advised not to tell anyone, not even her parents - I expect it has to do with her potentially fitting any group and/or being able to cross groups.

  If you read Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker, you'll want to know the final book Fifty Shades Freed is out tomorrow (Thurs). If you haven't read this trilogy I cannot recommend it enough. Very graphic and possibly disturbing sex content, definitely not PG, (the story deals with BDSM) but the sex is not gratutious or overdone. The author is EL James, and I think she gives Herself a run for the money.

    • Download a program called Calibre - it is free - Calibre is an on-line book management system that has all sorts of features, one of which is you search a book, then it lists all sellers available for your format, there can be as much as $10 price difference, and often you can find the book free (altough you need to be careful, some freebies are pirated and don't really work).   • I wanted to mention that many themes are general. Long before Herself wrote Outlander, J.K. Broster wrote a trilogy (now known as the Jacobite Trilogy) about an honourable Highlander during the Jacobite uprising and his interactions with an English soldier. I loved these books and recognized the theme when I read Outlander series but I still appreciated Outlander for the story, the differences and the similarities. Deborah Harkness wrote an original story involving relationships between vampires, witches, demons and humans. The fact that she spoke about testosterone poisoning didn't bother me a bit as I have read about it before-not in relation to either of the books. It's simply a coincidence.   • My 'Christmas book' is Falling Together by Marisa de los Santos. I am loving it! I've mentioned her books here before, her prose is beautiful - witty and warm. You come to feel that her characters are your friends and are sad to part at the books end. Marg it's not Cornelia and Teo but just as good.   • I just finished 'A Thread of Grace' by M D Russell. Setting is WWII northern Italy. I absolutely loved this book. Genre is historical fiction and the writing and story are beautiful. I also finished 'The Gargoyle' by A Davidson. This is fiction - psychological thriller?/paranormal love story? Not sure how to catagorize this one, but there are some funny clever lines and interesting characters. One of those books you have to keep reading to find out what is really going on.   • I've been enjoying a re-read of Dana Stabenow's Liam Campbell series. He's an Alaska State Trooper posted in a small town where he reconnects with a former flame. He's been demoted as a result of a problem that occurred while he was in command; and he's also dealing with the loss of his baby son and the coma that his wife is in. Great series of tales.   Helen Hollick's writing gets better and better! I read "Queen Emma" over the summer and just finished the sequel, "I Am the Chosen King."(Harold and William) Both were well written and had me completely sucked in! Her style reminds me a bit of Sharon Kay Penman's.If you like historical fiction you should try them!

  This is about the rise of Robert Bruce to becoming King of Scotland. By Robyn Young. About halfway through this one, but to be honest, it is very plodding. Lots of politics and battles, and I keep forgetting who is who there are so many characters. Definitely not a page turner, but might be to some people's taste.   The Du Maurier post below reminds me of an era when authors were required to avoid explicit description, and they challenged their writing skills to vividly portray events. I just read and loved this book, and part of its charm is it reminds me of something my mother would've read back in the forties. It's about a book club formed of necessity on the Isle of Guernsey during the German occupation of WWII, and how books can transform people's lives. I know it's been discussed here before. I wish Rachel Weisz were young enough to play Elizabeth McKenna in the movie they'll eventually make. Are any of you from Guernsey? I learned a bit of history from reading this. And I loved all the characters.

  Linwood Barclay - No time for Goodbye
  I'm half way through this one, loaned to me by a work colleague. The tag line is Gone wothout a trace. Until now...
  14 year-old Cynthia is having a bit of a rebellion, and has a massive fight with her family after her father finds her in a car with an older boy and drags her home. The next morning she wakes up and no-one is in the house.
  25 years later, the story is picked up by her husband, and there is still no clue as to what happened to her family all those years ago. Offered the chance to make a tv show recapping on the mystery, they take it, and the rest of the story unfolds from there. As I said, I'm still reading this one, but it's gripping.

  I discovered this author when I got a freebie for my Kindle earlier this year.
  
  Lauren writes a variety of genres from contemporary romance, paranormal romance and erotica. The two main series I have read are the Chase Brothers series and the Brown Siblings series. Both are 4 book series and follow the loves and lives of members of the families. What I like, (apart from the smexy men!) is that the time lines are not rushed - you know meet, fall in love, happy ever after in the matter of days / weeks. All but one (from memory) cover upto and over a year in the lives of the H/h.

  While waiting for the library to get me DIA, I have read two books I think might be interesting to others: "The Winter King - A Novel About Arthur" by Bernard Cornwell. If you like the stories about King Arthur, I think you will like this book. Also, Kristin Lavransdatter, a trilogy by Norwegian author Sigrid Unset. About life in Scandinavia in the 12th century. Another one I read, (while waiting for the library to get Outlander) was "Mists of Avalon" - the stories of King Arthur from a women's point of view...fabulously written and intriguing...couldn't put it down! Can you tell I am stuck in time! Enjoy! I CANNOT wait for Dragonfly in Amber (and all the rest).

  Just finished reading 'The Viper' by Monica McCarty - this is actually #4 in her Highland Guard series - takes place during Robert the Bruce's ongoing battles against Edward I. The main female character is an actual historical figure, Lady Isabella MacDuff Comyn, Countess of Buchan, who crowned Robert at Scone in 1306 (as sole living representative of her family) - against the wishes of her husband (John Comyn, who was NOT the same John 'The Red' Comyn slain by Robert in Greyfriars), resulting in her being eventually captured and hung in a cage in Berwick - which I found very distressing to read about, knowing it was so true. The main male character was Lachlan MacRuari - one of Robert's 11 Highland Guards - a secret group of pseudo-Seal Team guys who have trained very, very hard (that's the first book, the one I need to read next) - very virile, very fierce, and, of course, all Highlanders. This is Ms. McCarty's 3rd series with highlanders as the main characters, although the only one based on 14th century (the other 2 are based in 17th or 18th century, I believe) and I plan on reading 'The Chief', 'The Hawk' and 'The Ranger' (those preceeded 'Viper')shortly.   • She's a good writer - I like the way she gets a little bit of history into her books, and especially the variety of settings she uses in Scotland. In her first trilogy (Highlander Untamed, etc) she has some I really liked set on Skye and nearby islands. Her website has pictures of the castles and ruins that she's visited while researching, and I think that extra effort kind of comes through in how she makes you feel like you're really there in those romantic (but also foggy and damp!) places. When I mentioned Frenchman's Creek I was thinking how even without the explicit, 'steamy' nature of BDB and the Frost books (which I also liked), DuMaurier managed to get you to visualize the attraction between the pirate and Dona, and some of her double entendre's are very fun. I wonder if she was writing now if she'd spice her books up even more? Not that they need it, sometimes imagination is just as good as details :-) , but when you read an older book you do kind of realize how restrained the author's probably were by what was the social norm in literature, and now how almost anything goes.   I have really enjoyed this series of paranormal romance/urban fantasy. Frost is a good writer and the characters are fun. I just finished the 5th out of 8(?). I really didn't need more vampire porn with embarrassing covers, but stumbled across the series and have been entertained. If you like the Black Dagger Brotherhood, you may enjoy this as well.

  I just discovered PLF. He just died at 96 years old, and is considered one of the finest writers in the English language, perfecting the (modern version) genre of 'Travel Literature.' At 18, he set off on foot across Europe, from Holland to Constantinople, from 1933-1935. Along the way, he fell in love with a Romanian Princess at 20, and was living on her family's estate when WWII broke out in 1939. Returning to England to enlist, he and Balasha thought they'd see each other in about six months when it was over. They didn't meet again for about 27 years, when he snuck into Ceausescu-terrorized Romania looking for her. During WWII, he worked as a spy and saboteur for the British SOE, disguised as a Greek shepherd living in mountain caves, organizing Cretan resistance against the Nazis. He led the successful kidnapping and abduction of the German General Kreipe, but never wrote about it (his Cretan crew killed Kreipe's chauffeur --not part of the plan-- and PLF mistakenly killed one of his own men. He only talked about it late in life.) His second in command, Billy Moss did, in "Ill-Met By Moonlight." I loved "In Tearing Haste" and I can't wait to read all of PLF's books.   I know we were talking awhile back about the movie and hadn't heard from anyone about it so I thought I'd put my 2 cents in.
  
  I finally saw it with a friend who also read the book and we both really liked it. Unlike other movies from novels, I thought the dialogue and scenes were exactly like the book. I laughed with Minnie (who was great) and teared up too at parts I already knew was going to happen so that says alot to me about the acting. The little girl who played Mae Mobley was incredible. It's very much worth the rental if you can't get to see it before it leaves the theaters.

  • I really liked the movie. I am currently reading the book and yes, I think it is much better --but then, books usually are. I know Skeeter's mother will not "come around" in the book, which definitely feels right. The movie had too much of a 'Hollywood Feel Good' gloss to it, but I expected that. I remember suffering hair agonies in the humidity of the south in 1961, being a rampantly curly haired teen, with a touch of the frizzies, trying for the perfect flip. I don't remember anything like that machine Skeeter used to straighten her hair. I'm loving the descriptions of the food! Okra rolled in corn meal and --sinfully-- fried in Crisco is a very rarely prepared favorite, as is peach cobbler. Yum! I'm thinking of my mother who died nearly three years ago. I bought a small can of Crisco and our deal was I'd cook two diesel strength Southern meals a month, but we had to "eat healthy" the rest of the time. Oh, I miss my mom!   I really enjoyed these books and I like the way this author writes. She's good at peeling away layers as we get to know the characters and I feel like I've made some new friends. The books are an easy enjoyable read but deal with some dark subjects like bipolar disorder and cancer. Don't let this put you off because they are by no means the main focus and the characters are really likeable.
  I read them in the wrong order because a friend loaned me the second book (Belong to Me) and I liked it so much I bought the first. They both stand alone well but would be better read in the correct order due to the character development. I would definitely recommend them. Has anyone else read these and what did you think?

  After some encouragement from the Ladies I picked up Game of Thrones. Wow! I finished the whole series in about 3 weeks. Thank goodness my kids like fast food occasionally!I usually don't like science fiction but then again, I wouldn't call this a "typical" science fiction series. The characters are well developed and very different. As I went through the books I actually found myself cheering for some characters I despised at first. I highly recommend this series.   • After watching the series on HBO, I picked up the books and have been reading non-stop. I am currently a third of the way through the latest book, A Dance With Dragons. I don't usually read this type of "fantasy" and have to admit that although I enjoy the characterizations, I don't enjoy all the murders and violence.   I mentioned that a few of us 'meet' on an FB group to chat about books in more depth than here - any and all books.
  
  I want to emphasize this group in no way replaces LOL, it isn't meant to. Some time ago a few of us felt like we were hogging this page to talk about a non-Diana book, that is why the FB Book Addicts were formed. While we are friendly with one-another, there isn't the 'family' feel we have here. Most of us are LOLers, not all. And, like here, the only thing we have in common is a love of reading. We have almost all read Diana, the BDBs and the Fevers, but, otherwise, were have very eclectic tastes.
  
  We rarely discuss Diana's books, but it is great to be able to reference them (sometimes quite obscurely) and know the others will 'get it'.

  I've read 7 so far and am thoroughly enjoying them
  
  I'm sticking to my pattern of alternating books in different series and 'stand alones' with each other - but the temptation to just plough through these is strong !!!
  
  Demons, sex, werewolves, sex, witches, sex ....you get the picture
  
  I'm sure they're in some sort of order but I'm just reading them randomly

• Wild Rose by Jennifer Donnelly -- Annie Stewart, 20:23:25 08/27/11 Sat
  Just picked up Wild Rose (third after Tea Rose and Winter Rose) and I'm just a few pages in. It seems this book's central character is Willa who was a secondary character in one of the other books. I can't remember who she (no doubt it will be explained as I keep reading the book!) but can someone fill me in really quickly? Was she the sister of one of the central characters? What's the back story there? She is familiar but I can't seem to remember specifics about her. Help!

I may have to do another re-read of The Tea Rose and The Winter Rose but have downloaded this audible for the drive back from NB.
