Subject: Be aware....Be very aware

In the words of that great visionary Roseanne Roseannadanna: "It's always somethin'!" There's another computer virus/malware program out there I wanted to make you aware of, because it hit my laptop yesterday.

It's called Security Tools, and none of the anti-virus programs can catch it because it sneaks in via Java or ActiveX, both of which are on pretty much everyone's computer. I was reading one of the blogs I read almost every single day when this thing downloaded itself, so even your "trusted" sites aren't immune. My brother, who works as a computer network tech, says this particular virus is only one of many that access computers this way, and they're quickly becoming a royal PIA. Once it accesses your computer it's on there. It takes some time to remove, but I was able to do it myself. Directions are in the first reply. Might want to print them out, just in case!

I recommend having Malwarebytes on your computer. They have a free version you can download. Just be sure to check for updates every day. This program will remove most of these types of virus/malware programs, included that dratted Security Tools. If you get one on your computer like I did, shut your computer down immediately. Then restart it in Safe Mode. (In case you don't know how - I didn't! - just start pressing F8 repeatedly when you turn the computer back on.) Then choose the "Safe Mode with Networking" option. When your desktop comes up, open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Once it's updated, run a Full Scan. It can take over an hour, but let it do its thing. (Make sure to turn off your screensaver and change your power saver option to "Never.") Once the scan is complete, choose the "Remove all" option to get rid of the virus. When it asks if you want to restart your computer, choose "No." Then click on the "Quarantine" tab and delete everything there. Now you can reboot. Again, start in Safe Mode, open Malwarebytes and run another Full Scan, just to make sure. Then you're good to go.

If you are unable to update Malwarebytes in Safe Mode, then you have a very, very, very nasty virus, and you'll have to take the computer to a professional. So make sure you make a backup of your WIPs every time you write a word! These new viruses could wipe out all your hard work, and I don't want that to happen to any of us!
