Subject: Late homework, but homework it is!

Even with a week off I've been busy as hell with classwork and such. Class is interesting but still only marginally connected to literature. Must be more careful in my class selections. Anyway, enough about me, let's get to the fun stuff.

1. Character building after the fact. This is similar to the 'what's in your pockets' exercise. Take a character from your fiction, someone you've already established. With the person in mind, take a piece of paper, number it 1-34 and fill in the blanks.
1. Name 2. Character's nickname 3. Sex 4. Age 5. Looks 6. Education 7. Vocation/occupation 8. Status and money 9. Marital status 10. Family, ethnicity 11. Diction/accents 12. Relationships 13. Places (home, office, car, etc) 14. Possessions 15. Recreation/hobbies 16. Obsessions 17. Beliefs 18. Politics 19. Sexual history 20. Ambitions 21. Religion 22. Superstitions 23. Fears 24. Attitudes 25. Character flaws 26. Character strengths 27. Pets 28. Taste in books, music etc. 29. Journal entries 30. correspondence 31. Food preferences 32. Handwriting 33. Astrological sign 34. Talents.

Whew! Quite the list, that. But even if you don't use these in your actual writing, you know them and your character does too.

2. Line, please! Please use the following line in a scene: "Well, you know what they say, 'history is written by those who've hanged heros'."

Now, go write something and have fun!

[> Character Assessmemt: James >>>>> -- Page2, 15:44:06 09/25/10 Sat

Over an hour later, I have a good character assessment of James Conor Donovan a/k/a Seren. Wasn't sure how to do this really since Seren is in James' body and only remembers that he is Seren upon awakening for a short period of time. I figured the best way to handle this was to create an assessment of James and make another #, for OTHER INFO, at the bottom of the page to put notes of Seren. I thought I knew Seren/James before, but doing this made me think hard about the character. Now I can "see" him and what he's all about. Eye opener for sure.

Have some questions... Question 1: Can I use this story as my NANO? I haven't written anything more than what you all have read and I figured I could minus that word count from what I start writing in the NANO. To me the book starts with Chapter 1 and I only have a few pages to that started. Someone please (pretty please) give me permission. I don't want to feel like a cheat but most of my stories have prologues written or a 1st chapter done but that's it.

Question 2: Anyone else doing the November NANO?

Ok, so I'm off to put together Emma/Angel's character. Then later, start the outline of my chapters as I usually veer off track in the writing process but having an outline keep me in place. I know how I want it to end so that's good, right? :-)

I'm posting James' CA (wasn't sure if you wanted us too or not). If anyone has ???'s about this character let me know. I really want to flesh him out so ask me about him.

Thanks to all and hope you're enjoying the weekend.

Steph

33. Talents: Guitarist and singer
34. Other: Seren’s spirit/soul is in James. The essence that was James left his human body at age 13, after his father beat him unconscious while drunk. Seren “jumped” (when he was with Angel in the ether zone) into James body at that time. On this jump something happened when he took over James shell; he realized he could not jump out of this shell and his knowledge of “who he is” is slowly fading as James’ memories take over. He’s been in the shell for 20 yrs and is losing the battle. He remembers in dreams of who he (Seren) was but when awake “James” takes over and he forgets. He’s in a battle between his spirit memory and that of the suffering child James. If he doesn’t jump soon Seren will cease to be and he will become truly human, a new-soul.

More info/notes: When Seren “jumps” into a human shell he takes over the old souls essence/attributes/memories but his own memories stay intact. In other jumps he’s always been able to retain his knowledge of what he truly is and where he is from (a highly evolved spirit with powers from beyond). In the past he could stay within a human until the shell go old if he wanted but still retained his knowledge. When him and Angel became entangled in the ether and he jumped, there powers fused. Angel did not have “walk-in/jump” abilities. She could become a new-soul (or human) if she chose but she would have little memories of who she was. Seren/James believes part of this essence of her became fused with him and that is why he cannot leave his shell. In his dreams his spirit is searching for her. He wonders if she became a new-soul when they split while in the ether. He needs to find her, as he knows one thing: If he is losing his memories/essence - then she has to be remembering hers and he knows she must think she’s crazy. For a new-soul to grow up and start regaining knowledge of being a highly-evolved essence must be hard on her. Humans, he had learned, don’t understand – they are frightened of the unknown/unseeing. The few humans out there who have energy abilities are looked down upon, called crazy. As Seren he was afraid for her when he was James – he didn’t care. As Seren that knowledge scared him more. If he found her would they recognize each other? Would she have the knowledge/ability to help him? Would she want too?

[> [> Sure, use it for NANO. -- debikm, 16:12:59 09/25/10 Sat

I've done that before. As long as I end up enough extra words to cover the difference, I don't feel like it's cheating.

So Seren is losing himself because he thinks he and Angel's essence or something mingled, and she took his ability to jump? Or is James a really forceful personality contributing to it too? If James likes drugs so much, could Seren use that to gain greater control? It could be a way to take the reins, so to speak. Or James could be somewhat aware of something inside him (Seren) and uses the drugs and alcohol to supress it? Just a couple of ideas. The loss of control/possesion by another is something that has always fascinated me.

Hopefully, I can bring Seren out (the good soul) otherwise, yes... lock your daughters up. LOL

I'm really enjoying this HW. It helps me see my characters more and while doing this one on James (and with Deb's ???) helped me see a flaw in my story re: James/Seren I hadn't seen before.

Great postings of CA's by everyone.

[> Character assessment: Molly Whelan -- debikm, 17:08:07 09/25/10 Sat

Yeah, I need to get off my butt and do something, but I can't seem to motivate myself. So, I'll do this. It's creative, right? And constructive? And maybe I'll have a peek at the Treat of the Day as per Esther's challenge and see if I can procrastinate some more.;-)

Molly is the MC from last year's NANO Downtown Babylon. She.. well, read the CA, you'll get to know her. I'm looking forward to getting to know her better.

1. Name: Molly Abigail Whelan
2. Character's nickname: Molly, though certain of her patrons like to call her Miss Molly, or, much to her chagrin "Good Golly Miss Molly"
3. Sex: Yes please! Sorry, female
4. Age: *mumble* forty-*mumble*two
5. Looks: small in frame, slender, petite. Long light brown hair, though she color it and it has been everything from pale blonde to almost black. Hazel eyes, light skin, freckles.
6. Education: college graduate, but without any set goals. Majored in history with no intention of ever teaching.
7. Vocation/occupation: Owner of the Garage Bar (it used to be a garage/service station, and I couldn't think of a clever name that wasn't to damned cute. Molly doesn't do cute.)
8. Status and money: She makes ends meet, but has to stretch sometimes to do it.
9. Marital status: single, never married
10. Family, ethnicity: Only child, mother died when she was young, raised by her father and grandfather. Dad took off when she was just out of high school (Viet Nam vet, londstanding emotional issues) Molly doesn't know if he is alive or not. One uncle named Paul.
11. Diction/accents: Southern, north Florida accent
12. Relationships: Two major loves in her life. Adam, former fiance, who was killed in Desert Storm. Currently, Gil Freeman, a hardworking, on-the-road musician who breezes in and out of her life and her bed as time allows. She loves him deeply.
13. Places (home, office, car, etc): Mostly the bar
14. Possessions: the bar, a beat-up pickup truck and a collection of old garage and beer advertisements that are displayed in the bar.
15. Recreation/hobbies: dancing, she took ballet for many years growing up. Quarter horses, though she doesn't ride much any more, no time or money. Rode competition cutting horses in her younger days (a friend's horses), was rather good.
16. Obsessions: Gil Freeman. She loves him, doesn't see him for months at a time, wonders if she the only woman he has, though he has never given her and reason to suspect him, aside from being absent with his music.
17. Beliefs: Has inherent trust in people and looks for the good. Gives people the benefit of the doubt.
18. Politics: irritates the shit out of her.
19. Sexual history: three men, despite her owning a bar that fills up with en on a regular basis. Adam, a one-night-stand while she was grieving, and Gil.
20. Ambitions: to not starve to death or lose the bar
21. Religion: raised non-denominational Christian, mostly contact with Baptist churches. Personally, she isn't too impressed with churches and believes that if you're a good person, it doesn't matter what church or if you attend.
22. Superstitions: tosses salt over her shoulder if she spills any, doesn't walk on graves, and has a horsehoe hung up over the door to the bar, toe down, heel up, so the good luck won't run out.
23. Fears: Lightning, being alone the rest of her life (though she'd never admit it)
24. Attitudes: Mostly sociable and friendly, but not at all afraid to stand up for herself and those she cares about.
25. Character flaws: She can be unforgiving. Cross her once out of spite, and she's done with you.
26. Character strengths: She genuniely likes people and will welcome a stranger into her home. She's affectionate and caring with her friends
27. Pets: an Irish Wolfhound named Declan, that outweighs her by fifty pounds
28. Taste in books, music etc.: She's a big fan of rock music, all the stuff she grew up with, LZ, Allman Brothers, Tom Petty, Lynryrd Skynyrd, Bonnie Raitt. Loves the blues.
29. Journal entries: She's not a journal person
30. correspondence: Mostly with her uncle Paul, and that's usually about her father. They've stopped actively looking for her father, but she can't let it go.
31. Food preferences: She'll eat almost anything that doesn't eat her first. Lucky enough to have a hummingbird metabolism, and her working her ass off doesn't hurt.
32. Handwriting: atrocious, can't read it herself sometimes.
33. Astrological sign: Aries: March 19
34. Talents: Can still dance en pointe, good dancer in general, can mix pretty much any drink known, but disdains blender drinks. Has a good mind for figuring people out and can keep secrets.

Molly sounds like someone I'd like to hang around with. I'm now curious about her father (is he still alive? will he show up? how much did his departure affect her?) I want to meet Declan the wolfhound, and I'm envious of her hummingbird metabolism!

His departure affected very deeply. Even after twenty-ish years, she still has hope, even though he's been declared dead. Will he show back up? I dunno... food for thought.
>I want to meet Declan the wolfhound, and
>I'm envious of her hummingbird metabolism!

Declan is pretty cool, mostly lazy as many of the breed are. Proper motivation will change him into a formidible foe. And I so *don't* have that metabolism, so I decided I'd have one vicariously through her. (I can't dance worth a lick either!)

[> Very cool homework! Let's see if I can keep this *$&($& computer operational long enough to do it! >>> -- Page, 23:06:01 09/26/10 Sun

Between the computer and genealogy, I've not done a lot of writing lately. Maybe this will get me back in the mood. But the genealogy thing kind of took over my life for a bit. My sister's dad died when she was very young, and recently she mentioned she didn't know anything about his family. I heard that wistful tone in her voice, so I did his family tree for her for her birthday coming up on Tuesday. Interesting, too! She's descended from King Charles VI of France! See what I mean? It's trying to take over my life. :) Anyway, on to the assignment:

1. Name: Jay Sterling Carey
2. Character's nickname: Carey (it's all he'll allow!)
3. Sex: Frequently
4. Age: 24 when the book begins
5. Looks: Fair skin, hazel eyes, thick black curly hair he fights with constantly - wears it long, past his shoulders. Long legs. Thin. Graceful hands.
6. Education: Took some O levels, but never made it to university.
7. Vocation/occupation: Musician
8. Status and money: Comes from family money, and has made quite a lot on his own. He can spend it, but is overall very frugal.
9. Marital status: Married to Katie Scott, the love of his life
10. Family, ethnicity: Only child of Michael Carey & Jane Sterling. His ancestors were mostly Irish, but he doesn't know much about them. His Carey grandparents died before he was born, but he knew his mother's parents though they weren't the doting grandparent types. His mother's sister, Harriet, is the only extended family member he can bear to be around.
11. Diction/accents: Upper crust British, but sometimes he lapses into a Teddy Boy slur
12. Relationships: His best mate is Adam Greene, though he finds Adam rather flighty. Jay's pretty much a loner and is comfortable with himself. Katie's the only one he's ever let get really close
13. Places (home, office, car, etc): Bought a house in St. John's Wood when was 20; later bought a home in the Berkshires with Katie. Drives a sage-green Bentley and secretly yearns for an American pick-up truck though he can't imagine why.
14. Possessions: Loves antiques and art, and owns quite a few good pieces. Always on the lookout for pieces done by members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Owns enough books to start his own library.
15. Recreation/hobbies: Voracious reader, reads anything he can get his hands on, no matter the subject matter. Music, of course; he can play everything but drums. Collects money, coins and bills, from all the countries he's been to. Likes football (soccer to you!).
16. Obsessions: Katie. And his privacy.
17. Beliefs: He believes people should do whatever they want to do...as long as it doesn't inconvenience him. He believes in ghosts since he's met several.
18. Politics: He HATES England's excessive taxes and will vote for anyone who promises to reduce them so he doesn't have to go into Tax Exile so much of the year.
19. Sexual history: He's laid every woman he's ever wanted. And he's wanted a lot of them.
20. Ambitions: To have his music live forever
21. Religion: His parents were apathetic Catholics, so he wasn't raised with any overt religious influences. His Grandmother Sterling was devout, but all Jay got out of it was a distaste for all the rituals and posturing. He believes in God and hopes he's not offending Him too badly.
22. Superstitions: Knocks on wood, won't irritate a black cat
23. Fears: Heights and small places. Is terrified he'll wake up one day and Katie won't need him in her life anymore.
24. Attitudes: He comes off as arrogant and stand-offish, but he's really quite shy. He's a loyal friend to those who don't betray him in any way.
25. Character flaws: Refuses to admit he's wrong, even when he knows he is. Cheats on Katie with abandon and doesn't try too hard to hide it - to him it's just sex, not anything important; but he'd be devastated if she did the same thing. Can be sulky if he doesn't get his own way. Can be controlling.
26. Character strengths: Loves his wife with every fiber of his being. Generous with those he knows are his true friends. Loves being around children.
27. Pets: He's not home enough to care for a pet, but he loves cats
28. Taste in books, music etc.: Reads everything, but especially likes history. Loves rock and roll, Delta blues, eastern Indian music, classical music.
29. Journal entries: He doesn't have time for it, and is wary of keeping one in case it ever fell into the wrong hands.
30. correspondence: He tries to remember to drop his mum a postcard when he's on the road
31. Food preferences: Picky eater. Likes meat and potatoes, Japanese food, BBQ ribs, chocolate cake.
32. Handwriting: You'd think he had a medical degree
33. Astrological sign: Capricorn; January 9
34. Talents: Music, music producer, decent photographer.

I've neglected mine too long and I'm not very good at it even though I have a lot of info. It all came from kind souls who were willing to share. Can't afford Ancestry.com's exhorbitant rates. But I love the fascinating people you 'meet', lurking in the shadows of your family tree.

This is so cool. Somehow I knew Jay liked cats...;-)

Jay would love to have a cat or two, but can't bear the thought of going off and leaving a pet for extended periods. (If he had his druthers, he'd have a house full of calico cats!)

If you ever want me to look up something on Ancestry for you, just let me know. My DH got me a subscription as sort a perpetual birthday gift one year. The "world" thing doesn't have as much info as I'd like, but it's there if I need it! I have found some old baptismal records from Germany and England with it, so it's not all bad. *G*

I can't decide whether I love or hate Jay based on this profile. Maybe both. I love him 'cos he's cute and has broad musical tastes and is into history. I hate him 'cos he's a sulky man-slut and has had life way too easy. Probably a lot of women feel the same way about the man!

Interesting that there are so many Irish surnames among the characters. Carey, Wheelan, Donavan.

I noticed the Irish surnames, too! Maybe we're all secretly yearning to move to Ireland?

Jay's character flaws really bothered me at first, and I tried to "clean him up" on my first draft. But he refused to be changed. (Talk about control issues! *G*) He's the most true-to-life character I have because he insists on being himself, no matter how irritated he makes me. *G*

[> Character Assessment: Daniel Hollingsworth -- debikm, 23:41:50 09/27/10 Mon

Speaking of genealogy, that's why Daniel ended up with that surname. I'm related to some Hollingworths on my father's side and it sounded very English, so there you are!

Let's see what I can dig up on Daniel...
1. Name: Daniel Alistair Hollingsworth

24. Attitudes: In people and life in general, he hopes for the best but prepares for the worst.
25. Character flaws: Harshly unforgiving of lying. 26. Character strengths: very protective of those he cares for, especially women. Being raised by his mother made him very conscious of womens issues of safety and personal secuiry. Very intolerant of anyone who abuses women.

[> Character assessment: Richard -- Fi, 09:44:13 09/28/10 Tue

Great exercise! It's clarified a lot about Richard in my head. Even I didn't realise he was claustrophobic until I thought about the times in his life when he was really scared.

******

1. Name: Richard Joyce (his surname used to be Mahon after his stepfather, but he changed it to Joyce after his biological father).

2. Character's nickname: His youngest sister calls him "Rish".

3. Sex: Male

4. Age: 22 (in 1675, the point in the narrative I'm thinking about)

5. Looks:
Dark hair (which he wears long and tied back), blue eyes, fair complexion. Tall for a man of his era.

6. Education:
Tutored by Father Daly from age 10 to 15. He can speak Irish, English, Latin, Spanish, and some French.

7. Vocation/occupation
Currently works as a clerk for his father but hopes to take over the family business one day.

8. Status and money
Status is uncertain, given his illegitimacy and the times he lives in. His mother's family are fishing people, whose livelihood depends on the unpredictable sea. His father's family are merchants; they were once very rich, but lost a lot of property in the war of the 1650s, and are now struggling in the shaky political climate of the 1670s.

9. Marital status: single

10. Family, ethnicity:
The illegitimate son of a fisherwoman and a merchant. Two half-sisters on his mother's side and one half-sister on his father's. Plus several siblings who died in childhood.

11.Diction/accents
Western Irish accent. Can switch easily between the educated and uneducated versions.

12. Relationships
The love of his life is Rose Marshall, a family friend. His two closest friends are Tom Blake (a gentleman's son and Rose's cousin) and his own cousin Tom Flaherty.

13. Places (home, office, car, etc)
Lives at his father's house in Galway most of the time.

14. Possessions
Spanish smallsword that he won in a card game. Gold ring that he inherited from his paternal grandmother. Tin medal of Saint Christopher that he got from his mother.

15. Recreation/hobbies
He's quite the gambler and especially loves playing cards. He also likes horseriding when he feels the need for speed (the closest a man of his era can get to a fast car).

16. Obsessions
Feels insecure about his illegitimacy and is sensitive to other people's opinions about it. Any perceived insult against his mother touches off his buttons.

17. Beliefs
People need to earn your trust, but once they have done so, you should be completely loyal. Honour is more important than possessions. He believes in God, but often questions what He thinks He's up to.

18. Politics
He tries to avoid it, although it's not always possible.

19. Sexual history
Had some seriously heavy petting with Bridget, his stepmother's maid, until they were caught and she was dismissed. Lost his virginity to Ellen, an older married woman whose husband was at sea. Has slept with Rose. Mostly though he's just a big flirt with the ladies. Like most men of his era, he likes his women with a bit of meat on their bones.

20. Ambitions
Grew up in a port town and has always wanted to see the world. Conflictingly, he also wants to settle down with his true love, Rose.

21. Religion
Practising Catholic, although not always a good one.

22. Superstitions
He lives in a superstitious time and his mother's people are fishing folk, so he's inherited a lot of them! It's bad luck to sail if you see a red-haired woman or a fox on the way to the boat. When you sell something, return a "luck penny" to the buyer. Never give a light from your pipe on a Monday. If someone dies in bed (or straw for a poor person), you must burn the bedding.

23. Fears
Mild claustrophobia. He hates being penned in; the worst part of sea travel is being stuck below deck in bad weather.

24. Attitudes
Fairly typical for a man of his era. He appreciates wit and intelligence in a woman, but he also sees females as weak and by no means equals. He's excited about going to the West Indies and blasé about the manual labour being, umm, imported from Africa on a non-voluntary basis. Beating your wife or servant is acceptable and in some cases expected. Public hanging is a fun day out for all the family.

25. Character flaws
Like many young men, he's impulsive. Doesn't lose his temper often, but when he does you'd better stand back. Can be thoughtless and self-centered.

26. Character strengths
He's basically a kind person, expecially when it comes to people (or animals) he cares about. Intelligent and capable of learning from his mistakes.

27. Pets
Bran, a terrier. Found Bran at the foot of the gallows, where the dog's previous owner was hanging, and saved him from a man who was going to use him for dogfighting.

28. Taste in books, music etc.
He's not much of a reader, except for non-fiction books about sailing or horses. He sings what would nowadays be called traditional Irish songs, but in those days were just called "songs". Also fond of storytelling and drinking (slightly clichéed for an Irishman, I guess).

29. Journal entries
Doesn't keep a journal.

30. correspondence
When he's away, he writes regularly to Rose and his father. Also writes to his mother, although the priest has to read it to her since she is illiterate (as were most women of her class).

31. Food preferences
Plain food. Meat (or fish) and potatoes.

32. Handwriting
Father Daly made sure he has good handwriting.

33. Astrological sign
Born 7th March 1653, so he's a Pisces.

34. Talents.
Good with numbers. Has an ear for languages. Strong singing voice.

Doing something like this awhile back led to a very funny scene after I realized Valerie was afraid of snakes. I love the glimpse into other characters' heads.

Bless you a thousand times for keeping Richard true to what a man of his era would be! Nothing irritates me more than reading a story set in the 17th or 18th century and having the characters' attitudes read like a manual for 21st century political correctness.

You have certainly done your research on this era, and it shows. I love the superstitions Richard has, most of which I'd not heard of before.

[> Couldn't resist -- here's Katie >>>> -- Page, 16:25:06 09/30/10 Thu

1. Name Katie Margaret Scott Carey

2. Character's nickname: Her dad called her Katiebug, and lots of times her friends call her Kate. Sometimes Jay calls her Angel, and that’s her favorite.

3. Sex: Female

4. Age: 17 (and a half!) when the book begins

5. Looks: Average height; waist length dark brown hair; green eyes; slightly olive skin tone; her T&A are larger than she’d like

6. Education: Dropped out of high school, but got her GED

7. Vocation/occupation: President and owner of Mackenzie-Scott Inc.; eventually lead singer for a band called Whistlepig

8. Status and money: Lots of family money from her mother’s side, and her dad was a self-made millionaire. You’d never know Katie had money, though, and she rarely tells anyone

9. Marital status: Eventually married to Jay Carey

10. Family, ethnicity: Parents were Mackenzie Scott and Barbara Stevens, married when Mac was 59 and Barbara was 17 and quickly realized the marriage was a mistake, but only after Barbara was pregnant with Katie. Barbara was a textbook Narcissist – she had nothing to do with Katie, leaving the child to be raised by Mac, who adored his daughter, and the housekeeper, Deloris who was the only real mother Katie had. Barbara committed suicide when Katie was 8. Mac died when Katie was 17. One brother, Mark, who was stillborn when Katie was 8 Her paternal grandparents, Archibald Scott and Katie MacKenzie were Scottish immigrants (came to America in the late 1880s), they died before Katie was born; Katie remembers her Stevens grandparents, but only vaguely – they both died within two months of each other when Katie was 5. No aunts and uncles on her mother’s side, but her dad had an older sister, Peggy, who Katie loves; two cousins, Tristan and Archibald, but since they’re both literally old enough to be her grandfathers she’s not close to them. Whew!

11. Diction/accents: Since she grew up in Birmingham, Alabama she has a Southern accent she’s never lost. After moving to London and being around no one but her British friends, she develops a slight British accent on top of it, which makes her interesting to listen to.

12. Relationships: Her best friend is Maureen Smith – they’re more like sisters than friends. Complicated friendship with Adam Greene – he thinks he loves her, but she knows she doesn’t love him the same way. Close friendships with Stephanie Glass, Stuart Brady and Nicky Majors. And the love of her life, Jay Carey.

13. Places (home, office, car, etc): Sold her father’s house in Birmingham after he died, so the first home she ever owns is the house she buys with Jay in the Berkshires after they’re married. Later owns a beach house in Malibu, California. Loves cars, but doesn’t own one til she moves to Malibu and buys a BMW 3-series

14. Possessions: Most of her possessions are things her parents owned, and she keeps the majority of them in storage. She has a Gibson 12-string guitar, lots of record albums, an obscene amount of clothes, and some jewelry that belonged to her mother and grandmother. Her most prized possessions are her wedding ring and the pendant Jay gave her.

15. Recreation/hobbies: Writing poetry that ends up as song lyrics, writing music, reading, cooking, gardening (even though she’s rubbish at growing things).

16. Obsessions: Jay

17. Beliefs: Live and let live.

18. Politics: She got turned off of politics while living in the Haight because of all the rhetoric on both sides. She studies candidates and makes up her own mind about who to vote for, no matter which party they’re from.

19. Sexual history: It’s the Age of Aquarius, and casual sex is not a big deal. She’s slept with a lot of men, but doesn’t attach any significance to it until she meets Jay. She remains faithful to him with the exception of one night when she has too much to drink and allows Jimmy Page to escort her back to the hotel.

20. Ambitions: With the feminist movement gaining steam she keeps her one big ambition to herself – she wants nothing more than to be a housewife. And she’s super pissed that the prevailing attitude about that is negative. So she keeps her mouth shut about it.

21. Religion: Raised Anglican, and though she only goes to church at Christmas, she considers herself a “good” Episcopalian

22. Superstitions: Is careful not to break a mirror and crosses herself when speaking of the dead – except for her mother

23. Fears: Fear of abandonment stemming from how her mother treated her. Scared witless by spiders, and is terrified driving over bridges

24. Attitudes: Very easy-going and accepting

25. Character flaws: Has some control issues and can be stubborn

26. Character strengths: Intensely loyal and very forgiving

27. Pets: Her dad was allergic to pet dander, so she never had one

28. Taste in books, music etc.: Rock and roll! Loves Harlequin romances and movies that star Katherine Hepburn

29. Journal entries: She kept a diary in her early teens, but hasn’t bothered since then

30. Correspondence: She and her aunt Peggy have a lively correspondence, and write long letters to each other

31. Food preferences: Always willing to try new foods. Favorites are good ol’ American cheeseburgers and onion rings, Chinese, and Italian. Has a voracious sweet tooth

32. Handwriting: Very good handwriting!

33. Astrological sign: Capricorn; January 18

34. Talents: Music and singing, cooking, writing, has a knack for blending scents and colors for Maureen’s candles

[> Character Assessment: Rayne -- debikm, 22:48:49 09/30/10 Thu

She is my oldest and most beloved character, and I will probably never finish writing for her. Her story is where I've learned the most about my writing and for that I am grateful.

She inhabits a fantasy world of my own making, quasi-medieval-ish. Any questions are welcome, the world is evolving all the time too.

1. Name: Riannoch MacGhillbhrath (RAY-nock M-gill-uh-vray)
2. Character's nickname: Rayne is what she goes by, her brothers called her Raynie-May, she didn't think much of it when she was young, but missed it when she left home.
3. Sex: Female
4. Age: 12 at the beginning of the first story, 17 when she moves to the big city of Crowsport, 30's-ish when her story resumes (told you there were HUGE gaps in this story!)
5. Looks: tall, lanky, leggy, with long straight red hair, pale skin, freckles. What some would call a handsome woman rather than pretty.
6. Education: taught at the school in the village of Waterbrow near her family's farm, got lessons at home from her oldest brother and sister-in-law when there was a lot of work on the farm
7. Vocation/occupation: main occupation is as a horse trainer. Her magical ability is nature/life based, the first manifestation was a gift with animals; they respond to her touch and voice. This later takes the form of healing by touch, among other things
8. Status and money: Holds her own, but is not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination.
9. Marital status: Never married
10. Family, ethnicity: our world's equivalent would be Scots/Irish (there's that ethnicity again!)
11. Diction/accents: a fairly pronounced country accent when she was younger, it faded somewhat after she moved to Crowsport
12. Relationships: brief involvement with Kalid DelHaven after she moved to the city; formed a bloodbond (gave the couple a psychic link) with a man known as the Black Fox (real name Strom Blackford)
13. Places (home, office, car, etc): the horse farm she grew up on, Crowsport, Runeham and the chapterhouse of the Ryssan knights, the fortress of Ironmacrull (self-made king of a cold Northern holding), Larken Keep, home of Duke Ironmacrull
14. Possessions: not much, a saddle, travel needs, a kit with herbs for healing
15. Recreation/hobbies: enjoys the company of her friends, a casual game of cards, loves to ride
16. Obsessions: staying under wraps after she gets a price on her head and gains the attention of a city lord who has a fascination for her (and not in a good way)
17. Beliefs: Follows the maiden aspect of the Goddess, named Eldrienne.
18. Politics: avoids them as much as possible, mostly due to the unwanted attentions previously mentioned
19. Sexual history: the two men mentioned before and the love of her life, Garoben Valcuron, captain of Duke Arduval's Black Dragon guard
20. Ambitions: younger, to get away from the farm and move to teh city, after being on the run, to return to the farm where she grew up
21. Religion: mainly Pagan type religion, dual God/Goddess, three aspects of each.
22. Superstitions: plaited ribbons into horse's tails to ward off witches, carry rowan-wood whip for same reason. isn't really sure if she believes it or not but does it just in case.
23. Fears: Heights
24. Attitudes: gets cynical the older she gets, but still has a basic desire to see the good in people
25. Character flaws: short temper with people sometimes, especially those who (deserve it)abuse animals and the helpless
26. Character strengths: honest, infinite patience with horses/animals, good humored with her friends, fair-minded
27. Pets: bay stallion named Fortunato, for a time a black mare (Friesian) named Cimmeria.
28. Taste in books, music etc: not a big reader, books are hard to come by unless you're rich. Enjoys music, all kinds, but especially something she can sing with
29. Journal entries: running the public stable in Crowsport, she keeps meticulous ledgers and records of the health of various horses in her care
30. correspondence: she writes home to her brother when she's living in Crowsport.
31. Food preferences: plain, honest food, not much for fancy stuff.
32. Handwriting: neat and careful
33. Astrological sign: born on Beltane (May 1) makes her a Taurus
34. Talents: excellent animal trainer, good singer, good with plants, excellent herbal and magical healer.

I'm curious about the world that Rayne lives in. For example, what is the role of women? Is it normal to have a woman working as a horse trainer, or is Rayne breaking with convention?

There are warrior women in her world to be sure, especially in the city, but in the village where she grew up the role of women was pretty traditional, wives, mothers, working with their husbands on the farm or in their businesses. Rayne had the wanderlust that you'd expect her brothers to have. Her mother's magic was strongest in her, which spurred her wish to see more of the world.

Interview with Emma Brennan

Can you tell me more about your abilities? Clairvoyancy is the ability to speak/see the dead, while the other two are reading minds and seeing the future, right?

Yes, sort of.

Can you elaborate, I want to understand.

Well, the precog ability comes to me as visions or in dreams. They’re snippets of the future. It’s like watching a short commercial but real fast and sometimes they make sense and other times…I dunno. Telepaths…well, er, ummm I can do it but I don’t like too. I can hear strong thoughts from people but I feel like its an invasion of privacy and well, sometimes people are just mean with their thoughts. Trust me, sometimes its better not knowing what people think. I know I can project too. So like if I wanted someone to call me, I think about the person and then they call. I can do it with the spirits. They come to me and I can talk to them. They seem to understand me better than most.

So you converse with the dead?

They aren’t dead. We’re all spirits, some better than others.

What do you mean?

We are all spirits living in a physical shell. A spirit is an energy entity. There are many different spirits in many phases of being. Beyond here is a place, I know it exists, I’ve seen it in my visions. I call it true home - the place where all energy manifests from. It’s a wonderful place.

So is that where we come from?

Mmm, well your true spirit does. Everyone starts as one bright energy entity then it splits into two spirits. Not like, one good or one bad spirit, but….hmmm… how do I explain, like a ying and yang, if you will. The twins should equalize each other in traits. The twins are separated and choose paths, because, well… every spirit has a choice. Some stay in the ether as helpers and the others take a shell because they think they can make a difference; to learn and grow with knowledge. Sometimes they both come here and it takes many lifetimes to find one another. Some twins never find each other. It’s sad.

You say spirit, isn’t that the same thing as the soul?

No. You and me, we are spirits. When we became human and took on our shell we were given a soul, our twin if they chose the human path was also given a soul. You’re given this because once you take on the shell you don’t remember. The soul is your marker, a piece of your twin energy that the spirit takes with them when they become human. It’s the map back to true home and the key to the twins one true spirit. Once you choose to have a physical shell you will keep coming back until you’ve learned what you need to. Everything is written in the soul. It is nothing more than the journal of the twin spirits and their quest to find their way back to each other through knowledge and enlightenment. The twins souls are their beacons to each other, once they find each other, a soul union takes place, they start to become one again. Once found they will not want to be separated again.

Ahhh…so you’re saying our souls are a book of our many lives, that we reincarnate, and somewhere out there is another half of ourselves?

Yeah…some people believe some don’t. Because this world is crazy and so much evil is present it’s becoming harder for the spirits to remember why they came. They are choosing the easy path, the one the wrong-ones are presenting. This makes it harder for them to remember their way and why they were here. They keep taking the wrong paths and soon they are victims to the wrong-ones and become a lost soul.

Can they be saved – these lost souls?

Mmmhmm…yeah, sure, if they want to be. Spirits in the ether do try to help them while they are here. Try to steer them back to the right path. Humans call them angels but their not angels. Well…sometimes the angels come but only when the spirits can’t help.

What is an angel then?

Angels are twin spirits that have learned, had a soul union and choose not to take on another shell. They go back to the source and true home… becoming whole once again as an energy entity…an angel.
