Her determination took a serious hit at the sight of his long, lean fingers curling around the steering wheel, and she shifted her gaze out the window in hopes of a distraction. The façade of a red brick building caught her eye, and she nodded toward it.

“That’s where my new flat is.”

“What?” Jay braked in the middle of the street. “Your new flat?”

“Oh, yeah. I forgot I haven’t told you yet. I rented the flat under Maureen’s a little over a week ago.” She glanced over, and caught a sidelong smile that made her heart flutter.

“Then why aren’t you living there?” He eased the car up the street again.

“Well, it’s a little complicated.” The warm air coming from the heating vents on the floor crept up her legs, and seemed to caress her thighs. Katie shifted position, not needing any help in the heat department. “I rented it, and then went home to tell Adam, and that’s when he got the call about his old man. I didn’t think it would be cool for him to come back from that and find me just gone without any warning.”

Jay nodded as he turned right onto Ladbroke Grove Road. “You’re right.” He glanced over at her. “You’re a good person, Katie.”

“I’m glad you think so.”

“I know so.” The car picked up speed as they got on the A40, and headed across town. “When will you move, then?”

“Soon.” She settled into the supremely comfortable seat, and watched the lights flash by. “It’s the filthiest place I’ve ever seen, and I haven’t been able to start cleaning it yet. I didn’t want to leave Maur alone when she was so sick. But I did get the electric and water turned on, and had a phone installed.” She giggled. “Freaked the phone guy out when he saw the flat.”

“It can’t be that bad.”

“You haven’t seen it. I must have been out of my mind when I rented it.” She clutched the door handle, and stifled a surprised squeak as Jay whipped around a slower moving car, and then back into the inside lane. “Anyway,” she continued with only a small tremor in her voice, “Maureen said I can crash on her couch until it’s habitable.”

“Let me know if you need any help,” Jay said, his eyes on the road. He glanced over at her, surprised by her resulting roar of laughter. “What?”

Katie shook her head, overcome with mirth. “I’m sorry,” she gasped out. “It’s just that I can’t see a man who wears velvet suits and drives a Bentley tackling that sty.” She made an effort to quash her giggles at the consternated look on his face. “I just…you just took me by surprise.”

“I wouldn’t wear a velvet suit, Katie.” He drummed his fingers on the steering wheel.

Afraid she’d hurt his feelings, Katie slid across the seat and put her hand on his arm. “I know you wouldn’t. But looking at you now…” Her eyes traveled over him, from his lowered brow and somewhat arrogant tilt of his head, to his body encased in his elegant clothes, and shook her head. “I just couldn’t picture you up to your elbows in crud, and with dust bunnies in your hair.”

“Dust bunnies?” The corner of his mouth twitched, and he cut his eyes at her. “You didn’t mention there’d be wildlife.” He made a brief gesture with his head. “Come here.”

She hesitated only a second before sliding all the way over the soft leather to sit next to him. Jay removed his left hand from the steering wheel, and gathered her close with his arm. He cleared his throat.

“Let me know if you need help.”

“I will.” Secure in the knowledge he wouldn’t pull over to ravish her – they were now driving in a red zone, and the British motorway police would be on them in a heartbeat – she cuddled against him, glad of the chance to let her body get used to his. She took a deep breath, and relaxed at the realization she could be close to him without fear of being discovered. No one was going to walk in on them; they weren’t going to be interrupted. “This is nice, isn’t it?”

His arm tightened around her. “It is. Perhaps we should keep driving round for a while.”

“Or not,” she whispered against his shoulder.

He vibrated with silent laughter. “You’re right. Our dinner will get cold.”

“Can’t have that.”

The silence between them was comfortable as Jay exited onto Edgeware Road, and approached Lisson Grove. Katie watched out the windscreen with interest, never having traveled to his home by car. It was full dark now, and the lights of the city sprawl looked like carnival lights as they flashed by, blazes of color that appeared and disappeared with dizzying speed. She felt safe and protected, even though she thought Jay drove like a maniac. Smiling, she realized her earlier urge to rip his clothes from him had fled, replaced by a desire to take her time, and remove each garment slowly before exploring what was revealed. She was glad that urgency was gone, and much preferred the slow, breathtaking anticipation that took its place.

By the time Jay pulled up to the gates of his house, Katie was thoroughly lost, and knew she’d never be able to drive there on her own. He brought the car to a halt on the circular driveway in front of the main entrance to the house, shut off the ignition, and turned to take her in his arms. His kisses were warm and soft, and she responded to them, pressing against him and opening her mouth to his. Jay’s arms trembled, and she felt it when he made the effort to still them. He pulled his lips from hers with obvious reluctance, and shook his hair back. “Hungry?” he asked, his voice rather hoarse.

Katie titled her head back, and let a slow smile spread across her face. “As a matter of fact, I am.” Jay’s answering smile was so full of promise, her breath stopped. Obeying instinct, she leaned forward again, and pressed her lips against his throat, right in the hollow where his pulse beat. The thump against her mouth gained speed at her touch, and she could clearly feel the vibration in his throat as he drew in a sharp breath. His hands rose to frame her face, and lift her head.

“Let’s go get some dinner,” he whispered, his lips against her forehead.

“Okay.” She nodded, and took the hand he offered to help her out of the car.

Jay intertwined his fingers with hers, and led her into the warmth of the house. After taking her coat, he steered her not toward the dining room as she’d expected, but to the room he, Maureen and Adam all referred to as the lounge, and what Katie called the living room. Lit by a few small lamps, the main source of illumination came from the fireplace, before which a small, round table had been set with crystal and china, with two silver domes covering the food.

“Oh, Jay, this is wonderful,” Katie breathed.

“Don’t be too impressed.” Despite his words, Jay looked pleased at her comment. Ever the gentleman, he pulled out her chair for her. As soon as she was seated, he removed the domes from the plates. “Everything else may look posh, but it’s just plain, simple food.”

Katie drew in a breath of delight. “Oh, shepherd’s pie! I love that.”

“Oh.” Jay looked stricken. “It’s actually cottage pie.”

Confused, Katie looked at him as he sat down opposite her. “Is there a difference?”

“Well, yes. Shepherd’s pie has lamb. This,” he said, waving his hand at their plates, “is beef.”

Katie nodded. “Okay, shepherds and lambs. That makes sense. Anyway, I’ve never tried lamb, so I’m glad this is cottage pie.” She gave him a sly look. “Did you cook it?”

Jay kept his eyes on the wine he was pouring. “Of course I did. You don’t think I know my way around a cooker?”

After a careful study of his face, she shook her head. “I don’t know about that, but I do know you’re lying.”

“What makes you think that?” He set the wine bottle on the table with a thump.

“Your left eyebrow is twitching.”

The eyebrow in question arched for a moment before Jay broke into laughter. “You’re right, I am lying. I’m rubbish in the kitchen, can’t even boil water. My housekeeper made this. I did, however, tell her what to prepare.”

Katie grinned. “That’s what counts, right?”

“I think so.” Still smiling, Jay raised his wine glass. “To…” He stopped, considering.

Lifting her own glass, Katie smiled into his eyes. “To.” She gave him an almost imperceptible wink.

“To.” Jay clinked his glass against hers, and winked back.

The meal passed with talk, teasing and laughter. Katie had always enjoyed Jay’s company, but there had always been palpable tension between them before, the strain of forbidden desire. It had vanished, both of them secure in the knowledge that they were finally going to get what they’d wanted, and she thought she’d never been so comfortable with a man. Under his warm regard, she was able to relax and be herself with no constraints. It was the most fun she’d had since coming to England.

After the cottage pie and slices of delectable cheesecake for dessert, Jay moved to refill Katie’s wineglass. She put her hand over the mouth of the glass, and shook her head. “No more for me, thanks.”

“You’re sure?” Jay wiped his mouth with his napkin, and laid it on his plate.

“Mm-hm. I’m stuffed.”

“Alright.” Jay stood, and held out his hand.

Wondering what he had planned, Katie took it, and let him lead her to the middle of the room. She was surprised when he stopped and put his hands on her shoulders.
“Stay right here,” he told her. “Don’t move.”

“At all?” she teased.

He gave her an amused glance over his shoulder as he left the room. Curious, Katie waited until he came back, holding a square, flat package wrapped in pink paper. He held it out to her with a flourish. “Happy birthday.”

“Oh, wow!” Katie took the package. “This is the coolest…” She broke off, and looked at him, eyes wide. “Holy shit. Today’s my birthday.”

Jay shook his head, bemused. “Don’t tell me you forgot your own birthday?”

“With everything that’s been going on, I didn’t even think about it.” She cocked her head, and gave him a small smile. “You remembered my birthday, Jay.”

His answering smile was gentle, and he tapped the end of her nose. “Open your gift.”

Katie bit her lip, and looked down at the package. “What is it?”

“A new car.” Jay shrugged at her wry look. “You know very well what it is, so open it.”

“Okay, so it’s a record.” She began gently easing open the wrapping. “So who is it?”

“Do me a favor, and just rip the paper right off there, will you?” He grinned. “I’ve never seen anyone so particular about opening a present.”

Looking up with an evil grin, Katie grabbed a loose corner, and tore a strip of the wrapping paper off with an exaggerated motion. “How’s that?”

“Getting there,” he assured her. “Go on.”

Laughing, Katie removed the rest of the paper, and gasped in delight at the album in her hands. “Oh, far out! I didn’t know Led Zeppelin’s record was out already.” She broke into a spontaneous dance of joy. “This is freakin’ great!”

Arms folded, Jay regarded her dispassionately. “Damn, Katie, I’m sorry you don’t like it.”

Katie threw her arms around him, and gave him a resounding kiss on the cheek. “Thank you so much, Jay!” She released him, and gazed down at the album again. “I love the hell out it.” Flipping the record over, she smiled down at the picture of the band on the back cover. “Hi, guys,” she whispered, before kissing the cardboard. “I can’t wait to listen to…Oh.”

Jay looked startled at the quick change of tone. “What’s wrong?”

Katie hugged the record to her chest. “I just remembered the tape you gave me for Christmas. I’d meant to bring it with me, but I left it at home. You did tell me you’d play it for me next time I came over.”

A corner of Jay’s mouth turned up in a smile. “So I did. I don’t suppose we necessarily have to have the tape for you to hear the song, though.” He laughed softly at her look of expectancy. “Would you rather hear that first, or listen to your record?”

“I’d rather hear that first.” She grinned. “Please?”

Jay smiled, but the look in his eyes was serious. “You never need to beg me for anything, love.” Before she could respond, he leaned forward and kissed her softly. “I’ll be right back.”

The moment he was out of the room, Katie put the record on the table, and hurried to the couch. She sat on the edge, and raised her leg, tugging at her boot. There was no way to remove knee-high boots and remain alluring or sexy, and she wanted to have the operation over and done before Jay returned. There followed several moments of vigorous tugging, contortions, and swearing under her breath before the boots gave up their grip on her legs and feet. When Jay came back into the room carrying a twelve-string acoustic guitar, she was curled up in a corner of the couch, her bare legs tucked under her. To Katie’s surprise, he didn’t sit next to her, but took a seat on a rather spindly-looking chair near the fireplace. He spent a few moments checking the tuning of the guitar, and then looked up at her. His hair had swung forward, shadowing his face from the fire, and she couldn’t see the look in his eyes.

“It’s not Led Zeppelin, but I hope you’ll like it.” There was the smallest hint of uncertainty in his voice, and Katie hastened to reassure him.

“The hell with Led Zeppelin,” she said. She saw the firelight shine on his teeth at his quick grin before he lowered his head again, and began to play.

Only a few liquid notes had sounded before Katie realized she couldn’t watch him and hear the music at the same time. All of her attention was focused on the way he sat, his black hair falling around his face, and his Oh-God-Touch-Me fingers on the strings. She closed her eyes, shutting out the sight of him, and leaned her head back on the couch, focusing on the music he made.

Her breath caught at the beauty of what she heard, the bottom tones heavy and driving, but balanced by a delicacy and lightness that soared over the top. She sighed in delight, letting the music fill her, lift her, enter her soul. The hauntingly beautiful melody echoed within her, even after he’d stopped playing. Katie sat with her eyes closed for a moment. “Do it again,” she whispered. She opened her eyes a slit when she heard his soft laugh.

“Later,” he said, getting to his feet. “So you like it, then?”

She kept her gaze on his, turning her head as he walked past. “There aren’t words to describe how much I love it. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” His voice came from behind her, and she heard the clink of glass on glass. “Would you like a brandy?”

“No, nothing for me, thanks. I don’t want to get…” She paused, searching for the right term.

“Drunk?” he supplied, coming around the end of the couch holding a snifter. He sat next to her, and held the glass up, the firelight turning the amber brandy into a golden glow.

“I was going to say tipsy. You’d have a hard time getting me drunk.”

“I’ve noticed that.” Jay took a small sip, the muscles in his throat moving as he swallowed.

“You’ve already noticed you can’t get me drunk?” Katie was dumbfounded at the revelation.

“That,” he agreed. “And also the fact that you don’t partake of very many mind-altering substances.” He turned to her with a questioning look.

“I’ve tried them all.” She shrugged. “None of them floated my boat enough to make me want to try them again. I didn’t like the way they made me feel. I don’t like feeling…”

“Out of control?” His voice was soft.

“Exactly.” She nodded, and looked up in surprise at his soft laugh. “What?”

Still chuckling under his breath, he shook his head and took another small sip of brandy. “Nothing at all, love.”

Katie took the glass from his hand, and sniffed the contents. “I’ve never tried brandy, though.” She took an experimental swallow, and thought a blow torch had been aimed straight down her throat. “Son of a…” she wheezed.

Jay snickered, and patted her back. “Are you alright? I should have warned you.”

“Why isn’t it served with a fire extinguisher shooter?” she rasped. “Damn, that’s got a kick.” Her breathing back under control, she tried another sip, smaller this time, and let it trickle down her throat instead of gulping it. Her eyebrows rose in appreciation. “Actually, this isn’t bad at all, if you live through it.”

“Give me that.” Grinning, Jay took the snifter from her hand, and leaned across her to put it on the small marble topped table next to the couch. “We wouldn’t want you to get drunk and lose control.”

Katie inclined her head, moving her face close to his. “Too late,” she said, her voice almost a whisper. “I’m already intoxicated.”

Jay stopped, still leaning over her, his face inches from hers. “Are you?”

“I must be.” She licked her lips. “My head’s whirling.”

His brandy-scented breath was warm on her skin. “Heart pounding.”

“Short of breath.”

“Body trembling.”

“Body…yearning.”

“Wanting..”

“Needing…”

“Aching…”

“Oh, yes, Jay.” She saw his lashes sweep down over his eyes before his lips touched hers, setting her aflame.

I like how you let them get comfortable with each other in the car during the ride, how Jay served her cottage pie (I never knew the difference before BTW, now I have a new wrinkle in my brain!). The internal comment about being able to remove boots and not remaining alluring made me laugh. I like this slow progression, the meal, the music, the building-up of tension and anticipation, all great stuff...

Thank heaven for The Best of British! And for three great British friends for being Brit-pickers for me.

Glad you got a laugh out of the boots! *G* I was very inspired by that picture of Jimmy the quote you found that said a good sex scene makes the reader want to have sex, and I couldn't see removing those boots adding anything to that feeling. So I had her yank them off while he was out of the room, and couldn't see the wrestling match. *G*

I hope to have the actual event completely written soon, and will post. I hope it makes everyone want to grab their significant other, and throw down!
