GM Crops- Good or Bad?
Over Easter weekend, I was paying extra attention to some possible problems that I could research throughout the rest of the quarter. While my mom and I were in the store buying food for a barbeque, I noticed seedless watermelons and grapes. I decided to find out more about them and came across the fact that these crops are hybridized in order not the have seeds. Since I have a vivid imagination, I started to think about the amazing crops that could be produced from genetically modifying them. This brought me to the big question of the genetic modification of crops. More specifically, what is exactly done to the crops? What are some of the benefits from this relatively new scientific method? In contrast, what are some of the dangers? And finally, why do we need to modify these crops at all?
One theory I thought about for a reason to modify crops is the population problem. Since the population is growing, farmers are running out of land to produce a lot of crops. Perhaps, with genetically modifying these crops, you could produce bigger and better crops in larger quantities with the need for less land.
Another thing I thought about with the new power to modify crops is the ability to make the crops however you would like to have them. When I say this, I am not talking about shape, size, and color; I am talking about the ability to make them resistant to pesticides and other crop destroying chemicals or measures.
All of these questions make me very interested in this new scientific method of genetically modifying crops. I would like to gain an understanding about how the method is actually carried out. With this understanding, I will be able to hopefully gain a positive opinion towards this possibly beneficial method. I will also be able to target some of the dangers.
