Gun Control

For as long as I can remember, guns were a part of my life. I got my first BB-gun when I was eight years old, and was trusted not to shoot my eye out. My father taught me to shoot his pistol and .22 caliber rifle when I was about eleven, and I bought my first gun at fourteen, the age I began hunting. I have been surrounded by people who enjoy, respect, and use guns. Recently, though, I have been challenged by theories of gun control, which aim to take away my guns. I have always been aware of gun control lobbyists, but I have most recently become aware that everyone has a view on this issue, and they tend to be passionate about it either way. Why do people want to control who has a gun?

One theory is that gun control will keep the guns out of the hands of criminals. By only allowing military and police to own and use guns legally, people suspect that crime rates will drop, murder rates will decrease, and the U.S. will become a safer place to live. Maybe the violence in our lives has gotten to the point where they feel this is the only way to stop it.

Another possibility is that too many children are dying from accidental shootings, and gun control could save their lives. Perhaps if guns were kept out of homes, children wouldn’t be introduced to them and use them incorrectly.

Perhaps animal rights activists want gun control in order to save animals. Since we do not need to hunt for our food these days, hunting has become a sport. Animals are the product of the sport, and some people feel very strongly that we are killing beautiful creatures that we have no right to injure.

I would like to understand if gun control is an issue that stems from fear, facts, or rumor. Since I am obviously against gun control, being able to explain the evidence in support of it would help me formulate my own views in a clearer manner, and perhaps take the emotions out of a fact-based argument.
