Heavy Rock Healthy For Youth’s Ears?

It is a widely debated subject – whether or not young adults are influenced by listening to heavy rock music. I used to think that such a statement could only be made by people who don’t like rock music. However, recently I have been persuaded to believe otherwise. Is heavy rock healthy for youth’s ears?
One theory is that there are underlying messages that are hidden in such music. Some would call these messages subliminal – where the ear cannot pick the message up enough to understand and restate what was said. On the contrary, it is believed that only the subconscious can detect these messages, and therefore can effect the person listening. I once was told about a small magazine and video store that had problems with stealing. When investigated, the music that was being played over the speakers had subliminal phrases of steal and negative things such as this. This store owner, when made aware of the situation, decided to provide music with good subliminal messages – such as “don’t steal, be good, stay out of trouble.” The results from this store owner backed up this theory because the rate of crime in his store went down tremendously.
Perhaps the strange stories that are associated with heavy rock could aid us in understanding the situation better. A certain group’s (names withheld) opening concert, had many wondering what was in this music. That night after the concert with performers painted to look evil and dripping of blood, three young adolescents went up to the mountains together and, from papers that were left behind, they were making some strange vows (to or for what, I’m not sure). When they were found, each one of the boys had cut off the other’s heads. They first cut one boy’s off, and then another got to cut the second boy’s off, and then the last one slit his won throat. The people who found these boys where absolutely bewildered at what they saw. Anyone would be.
The only common evidence that would cause these young adults to do such a thing was the concert they had just attended. They all had good, loving homes, and were not poor or in need. I would be leery about what music I would let my children listen to. All the evidence seems to point that hard rock music can indeed influence the minds of our youth.
