“Mansfield Park” is probably noted for one of the best works of Jane Austin’s literature. It is a mature text about the society of the English people during the Victorian era. Author, Jane Austin of “Mansfield Park” denotes the attention to the cruelty of slavery, and the hardships of poverty. This was announced in a most shocking manner, as she described in ink. The acclaimed “Pride and Prejudice” by the same author is a little bit similar as “Mansfield Park,” however is written in a much lighter context.
Although “Pride and Prejudice” is not centered on hardships, it still shows the present audience the dealings with Victorian society. “Pride and Prejudice” moreover deals with the Benet family considering the sacrament of marriage for two of their five daughters. The eldest Miss Benet (Jane) is considered ‘the local beauty,’ and struggles to marry a handsome man who claims five thousand pounds a year in his salary. This would bring the family up in status, along with Miss Elizabeth Benet, who although within great conflict throughout a good portion of the book, resists the affections of a proud Mr. Darcy (who maintains ten thousand pounds a year!). As Mr. Darcy grows steadily fonder of Elizabeth, her stubbornness softens and lessens her hatred towards him.
One comparison of “Pride and Prejudice” and “Mansfield Park” is that love seems to dwell in the heart of both books. There are always lovers, and betrayers involved in her novels. The protagonists or heroes of Jane Austin’s novels tend to be women, or at least, women of great intellect background. A few examples of the protagonists could be Elizabeth Benet of “Pride and Prejudice” who has incredible wit (thought of as the most intelligent out of her four sisters). The protagonist of “Mansfield Park” would most likely be Fanny Price, who denounced living in the wealthy conditions with her rich aunt and uncle. She insisted on moving back with her family, who were in poverty to be loved and cared for as an equal.
The difference between “Mansfield Park” and “Pride and Prejudice” is very easy to differentiate. The difference is mainly found in each novel’s plot. “Mansfield Park’s” plot is basically about a young girl being moved out of her mother’s home (who was very poor with many children) to her rich aunt and uncle’s home (who had only three children—there were two girls and the other was a boy). “Pride and Prejudice” is essentially about two young women finding two eligible young men to whom they would wed. As the books are very different from each other, they are the same when they speak of morals and there is obviously a beginning, middle and an end.
While both of the books, “Mansfield Park,” and “Pride and Prejudice” are extremely slow reading novels, they are a joy to read if you can ever get a chance to read them.
