I would make a safe assumption that folks favored the GPW due to the Ford name and nothing more, since the core powertrain was Willys, Warner and Spicer. Usually, folks are brand dedicated based on their fathers, grandfathers and/or other family members choices.
The go devil engine and manufacturing capability were the only significant factors in choosing a contractor for the jeep. If Ford could have produced a competativc engine, there would not have been a Willy's jeep.
