OMG- HI!!!! (So nice to see you !)

Well, when I was a manager(until 4 yrs ago), memos and "general discussions" during meetings were used quite a bit. I like the idea, unless the infraction is personal in nature or an issue that MUST be dealt with immediately.

For instance, if I had an employee that was showing up late (even a time or two), I would have no problems posting a memo or addressing it in employee meetings(without pointing fingers). I would tell everyone that it was very important for us to all remember to be on time, and inform everyone of the policies/procedures for disciplinary action wrt tardiness.

I worked in retail management, so I wasn't always around when employees clocked in. I did daily "checks" of our computerized clock-in system, though. Even if one of my assistants had addressed the tardiness with the employee, (at the actual time of said tardiness) I feel it is important for the employees to realize that the general manager is aware of what's going on in all aspects of the business. Addressing issues with memos and meetings is a good way for employees to realize that the manager IS aware.
I have found that addressing these issues with memos and meetings is also a good way to deter other employees from trying to get away with the same tricks.
