I read your TTC pledge the other day and thought it was great. Kicking the cigs is a good thing, hon. You won't be sorry. I'd just like to give you some advice from someone who's BTDT.

I started @ 18/19 and smoked pretty much a pack a day (Camels, no filters - I was such a hard-ass) until Jan 1, 1995, so about 7 years. I also lived in Spain for about 3 of those years, which is another reason I smoked so much -- Spain is a tobacco company's dream. I quit **cold turkey** because I knew I wanted to have babies some day. The first 6 weeks were a nightmare! I won't lie to you. After that it gets better, but even today when I'm stressed I still crave a ciggy now and then.

The best advice I have is to try to change your routine as much as possible. After dinner, for example, instead of lingering at the table with a smoke, I would jump up and start scrubbing pots and pans, sometimes even going so far as to clean and scrub the whole kitchen if I was going crazy for a drag. (My house was spic-n-span, let me tell ya!) And I just got through it one day at a time. Sometimes I would tell myself "if I can make it through the next 15 mins w/o a smoke, I'll be OK". And I was. Even as much as 6 months after quitting I would be on my way out the door to go buy a pack, would get to the store, wimp out, and only buy a pack of gum instead. I never started again because I never wanted to have to quit again, if that makes any sense. It's a series of small victories, Jo, and the craving will last your whole life. Shit, even writing this now makes me want one! LOL

I wish you the best of luck and am sending "Nerves of Steel" vibes. When you start to get crazy, just plop down and write me a long email about anything and everything. Maybe by the time you send it, the urge will have passed. ;) You can do it, girlfriend. xoxo
