Well, they had to arrive by intelligent beings bringing them there, or perhaps they were "seeded" there by an asteroid with organisms that eventually evolved into the worms and took over Arrakis echology. But Leto did say they were "brought" there or something like that. Maybe a race of aliens sent out terraforming drones much like Ominus did in B. Jihad. Perhaps the worms were the key to making any planet habitable to the aliens. If this is the case, the worms could have originated anywhere in the whole of the universe. Humans could expand indeffinatly and still not find the source. Or they came from the future or a different universe alltogether. I also recall that Arrakis wasn't native to it's solar system because it orbits at an angle to the rest of it's system. A free floating planet that was snagged by the star it now orbits? Or perhaps moved to a possition more favorable to the worms?
