Subject: Mentats in GEoD

If I remember right, Leto II outlawed the training of mentats.. We know that some BG's disobeyed and were still trained. He must have known this- at that time, he kept control of atreides genes so they couldn't have been invisible to him.

My question is why would Leto allow the BG to have a monopoly over mentats?

Taken a step further, since his entire goal was to expand humanity and create the unpredictable, he sought for humanity to defy logic and become unreasonable.

Upon re-reading Heretics i remembered this being a major point in several discussions. (see waff's meeting w/ HMs and waff's meeting w/ Taraza) Something is building up here..

This is what i make of all of it:
BG have monopoly on Mentats (logic)

BG grow dependant on Mentats (archivists: see Taraza complaing about procedure pg. 213 Heretics)

People from the scattering; (and i assume most atreides) develop unpredictable patterns that defy logic/predictablity.

Because of the BG's dependance on Mentats; they will experience either a great defeat or are completely wiped out.

Now i ask, what did Leto see in the future that made him ignite all of this. Or did he simply not see this b/c of all the atreides (anti-prescient) involved. Not to mention the no-ships.

comments? questions? flaws?
