Subject: Maybe what we need is a little controversy.

Let’s face it. There’s a lot more to the difference between the original Dune novels and the prequel novels than a different writing style. They have made the transition from heady, highly creative speculative fiction to the realm of cheap Star Wars-Star Trek clones. For this, I believe it’s easy to cite the cause. These books would have been a whole lot better if Brian had selected a talented writer to be his partner.

But rather than focusing on Pinky’s bad points (i.e. anything having to do with characters, plots, language, etc.), I’ll do the opposite and focus on his few redeeming qualities. Perhaps in the course of this thread we can come up with a complete list of his positive contributions to the Dune universe.

Here’s one that comes to mind almost immediately: Duncan Idaho’s swordmaster training on Ginaz. I think of a group of trainees fighting each other on top of giant tortoises on a volcanic island, and it seems very "Pinkyesque" but also very interesting. Obviously, he should never have touched any full-length Dune novels, but it would have been interesting to see some shorter contributions to the arena of Dune fan fiction. One such contribution could have been a story or short graphic novel about Duncan’s training. That would have been cool. And the real authors could worry about the novels.
