I would vote Dan Simmons as the best writer to DuniWrite. Frank had it all: writing talent plus a very well-researched ecological, religious, philosophical, and political vision. The Duniverse needs a big-picture kind of writer. I loved Hyperion; it was an amazing adaptation of Chaucer's Canterbury Tale. I thought the descriptions of space battles quite elegant.

Ursula Le Guin is another favorite of mine. Her stuff is not the testorone-laden tripe that is passed off as most SF these days. But...I think she is a word and phrase lover and not a big-picture person like FH and obviously Tolkien. "A Wizard of Earthsea" is one of my favorites because of the beauty of the language and excelent story. She seems to be compelled to return every so often to write about the world but seemed too intersted in other things to create a large-vision master-world for Earthsea.
