Subject: The Predator Prunes his Flock

Hey:

After forcing myself to read The Battle of Corrin, I picked up Children of Dune and God Emeror of Dune. Ah, what joy! I just finished God Emperor for the zillionth time and something from Siona's test stood out. We have discussed in this forum that the Machines are coming back as the big enemy.

I originally took the vision of machines finding humans in their caves as an alternative vision, but, I think their purpose is to rid the universe realm of non-Siona-like humans. Using Ixian prescient technology, they will eliminate all humans that don't fade from Oracular view.

Thus the predator prunes the weak from the flock and improves the species. Of course the species is spread geometrically over 1000's of galaxies from the scattering. I think this was one of the reasons that Siona still wanted to kill the worm after seeing The Golden Path.

I found Leto's discussion with Anteac about the definition of machines to be facinating.

And IDAHO, to respond to your earlier question on media/mind control. I think Frank was a genius but not uber knowledgable. The chapter where Idaho climbs the shield wall shows that Frank understood climbing intellectually but had never actually climbed; he didn't think with his belly.

Towards the end of GEoD, Leto mentions that he controls music and artistic expression to remind humans that they no longer participate in history. This was to compress the human race like a giant spring to explode them into universe through the scattering. Frank gets it with his description of a walking population being easier to control but I wonder if he ever read "Manufacturing Consent" by Noam Chomsky.

Cheers, AntiPaul
