In fact, the first "BG" who was able to change her body chemistry was a woman who was poisoned and was able to alter either the poison or her body chemistry so that it would not affect her. (Can anyone dig this up? I think it was in Heretics, but maybe GEOD) Presumably this was not spice extract. In fact, she probably did not gain any access to Other Memory, etc., from altering a simple poison. My evidence for this is that many BGs are able to change their body chemistry without being RevMos. (Irulan for example, or BG concubines controlling their abilities to conceive.)
However, I believe in time the BGs discovered and used only Melange for this ritual because of its additional powers/properties (such as Other Memory.)
