The Honored Matres' secret weapon spreads "bloodless death" and is VERY limited in supply. Their destruction of Rakis seems to be the same way they destroy many planets. They won't use their special weapon unless they feel it's their only option.

Think: "nuclear holocaust" or something similar. Yes, Rakis is now a lifeless black ball.
