Spice allows , with the help of the Holtzman generators,people to travel from system to system by "folding space." Holtzmamn hasn't invented that generator yet. suppose he invents it, but it takes a super-computer to navigate with it?
From what I gather, it's the super-speed of folding space that makes a prescient Guild navigator or a super computer neccessary.
Imagine how improtant spice woudl have been if a super computer would have invaded the imperium at any time before the reign of Leto 2? I think that we can gather from his conversations in GEoD that this was going to eventually happen.
I would suspect that fats space travel- by the Guild or the free humans vs the machines- will be the key to victory of Omnius in the end of this prequel series...
It is also the dependence on spice that the empire had, that led Leto to take over as God Emperor and lead humans down a path that would force them to adapt and invent, to become less dependant on spice.
