Paul was the Kwizayz Haderach- "One who could be many places at once.' This meant that he had access to both his ancestral memories and his prescient abilities, combined with mentat abilities that allowed him to compute the happenings going on in the present.
The entire bene Gesseritt Rev Mother "sharing" of other memory process was used as a shield to protect each new Rev Mother from being over-whelmed by the personalities in other memeory. This, according to Ghanima and Leto in Children of Dune...
Most Rev. Mothers only have a very limited amount of other memeory to access, according to Odrade's thoughts in Heretics of Dune. She was one of the "special ones"(in her own words) that had nearly total recall of other memory- from her ancestral memories to the memories shared by other reverand mothers.
Frank used the ancestral memory ideas all along through Dune, but in The later books he went into more detail.
Basically, Paul was the first male personalitiy strong enough to be able to endure access to other memory. This made him the Kwizatz Haderach, when combined with his Mentat and prescient powers.
